2010 T4R Limited: Which Extended Warranty Policy to Buy?

I bought my first T4R in January, a 2010 4R Limited (Silver with Black Interior and all the goodies). (2002 X-Terra was my previous off-road vehicle, traded at 110K miles). At the time, I bought an extended warranty from the dealer which cost $1400 and covered up to 75,000 miles. Since joining the forum, I read that some of the experienced TR4 owners have 7/100K warranties.

Question: The dealer says they will refund the warranty to me if I desire. I usually trade at around 100,000 miles. Should I shop for a more comprehensive warranty policy? If so, what is the best extended warranty policy?

I wouldn't buy one. Every time I've purchased a new car, from a Chevy to a Volkswagen, they push the extended warranty. I don't see much value in it. What car needs major repairs before the extended warranty runs out? Now if they would warranty everything to 200,000 for $1,500, then I'm in.

I'd disagree. I've had two after-market warranties - one on a BMW 330i and one on a VW Toaureg - and both proved to be valuable well in excess of the original cost to purchase the coverage. Like anything else, the key is in researching the company you're buying from...for some reason people tend to view warranties as a commodity you simply search for the best price on. Do your research, and they can work in your favor when problems do arise.

That said, one of the biggest reasons for me buying a Toyota is that I'm hoping I won't NEED an extended warranty...

There's a guy on the Toyota Nation forums that deals in Toyota Factory warranty. I've purchased from him before and have had no problems. I made an inquiry with him (for the T4R) and this is what he provided:

"I am currently offering the Toyota Platinum 7 yr / 100,000 mile Extra Care
plan w/ $0 deductible for $945.00, or the new 8 yr / 125,000 mile plan for
$1465.00 on the 4Runner."

I would stay away from aftermarket warranties as well. There are two people selling Toyota warranties on this site. Troy is one and there is another guy from Kansas. They both offer a great price on the Toyota Platinum warranty.

Most warranties companies will fight you if your vehicle has any modifications that they could claim was the cause the damage/worn out part. Anything from small items like air intakes or upsizing your tires or other major mods such as lift kits will give them fuel to fight your claim. I've also heard of the warranty companies fighting claims due to off road use.

If you're going to mod your truck I'd skip it.

Speaking of extended warranties, anyone have any feedback on the 7yr / 100,000 mile "Mechanical Breakdown Insurance (MBI)" from insurance companies like Geico, Allstate, or Progressive?

An extended warranty is just an insurance policy - if you believe in insurance it's up to you whether you think it's worth it.

I'd never buy an EW other than from Toyota.

It's a high margin product for the dealer, and I decided to buy it only if I could get a good price. And, (I think) you can opt for different deductibles.

I got 6 years/75,000 with my new vehicle purchase. I shopped online, and told the dealer what I could buy it for and he matched $659.00. It has zero deductible, is transferrable, and cancelable/refundable.

In my mind, this doubles my OEM wty for $220.00 per year. I felt it was worth it.

See my post above...... I computed I'm paying $220.00 per year which is less than Geico's deductable, plus you're paying $86.00 per year in premiums. Hmmmm, don't think so.

I went with the 6 year/125k mile warranty. I drive b/w 20k and 25k a year. At that rate my bumper to bumper would be over in about a year and a half. This extends my bumper to bumper to 6 years.

I paid $1019 for the Toyota Warranty. It is worth the peace of mind for me.

I have warranty on the tires. Fixes all flats, dings wheel damage. This includes all aftermarket tires and wheels.

In short I DO NOT trust insurance companies at all, but was curious as to what other folks here were doing. In light of the deals you guys seem to be getting I am going to go in to my local Toyota dealer this week to see if they can hook me up with something similar.

I'm driving down to VA to pick up my new 2010 TE on Saturday morning.

The dealer called and told me it'd be smart to buy the extended warranty from them, they'd offer me a $50 discount and I could get 100k mile coverage for $1450 (they never told me how many years the coverage was for). :wtf:

So after I agreed that it may be a good idea for me to have the coverage, and told them to add in the $1450, I did a search on this forum...just to see if people liked the extended warranty or not.

HOLY COW! I come to find out there are 18 different warranties! I assumed there was only ONE! (that's all I was offered) Then I see that I should call Troy in Massachusetts...THANK GOD I did! His quote on 5 year/125k miles just saved me over $500!!! :cheers:
