2010+ TRD Supercharger

Of the two, re-gear. Given you're spinning bigger wheels, make the differential work smarter, not harder. Especially at slower RPMs where the supercharger wouldn't even spool up.

Yea, that's what I was leaning towards. With only 40k miles in nearly 5 years I will most likely have both before I get rid of the vehicle anyway since I plan to have it for the long haul. I will probably do the gears first.........but I want a blower dammit!

A question I have is, given these HP/TQ gains, would this be more beneficial than doing a regear to 4.56? With the weight of all my steel and 34" tires, I would like to eventually get a bit more pep back. Obviously doing both would be the ideal case, but if you had to choose one, which would you go with?

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I'd be interested to hear the arguments for regear vs. supercharger if you could only pick one. Cost wise the supercharger would be a couple grand more since I would go the ECGS route and throw in a front ARB at the same time, but which would be better to gain power back?

Overall, your question is a tough call. Two very different things. The gears have many advantages including more control at low speeds (better crawl ratio...).
Gears increase TQ at the wheels but reduce wheel speed (this all depends on your tire size). This allows the motor to rev easier in each gear and maintain speed up grades...

For argument sake... I think we can think of this supercharger producing 100+ tq at the crank. We pretty much know this is the case at 4k RPMs, but it's unclear at this point how early in the RPM range the TQ hits. It should be pretty low, but hard to say without driving it. Most of these types of rotor packs come on strong around 2.5K-3.5k, but the motor keeps its natural VE curve either way.

The Supercharger would increase TQ at the crank and drive shafts... This also allows for faster revving and more TQ at the wheels. The end result is similar, but also very different.

So I'll throw some math at you to attempt to explain. Assuming constant tire size and 0 drive-train friction loss.
If you were in 4th gear and max engine output stock (estimate 270TQ). You would be putting out something like 1007 at the output shafts. Change to 4.56 gears and that goes to 1231.2 (keep in mind there is also a proportional speed decrease). So roughly a 22% increase in TQ.

If the blower adds 100TQ, that puts it at 1007 for the output shafts with stock gearing vs 1380 via blower with no decrease in speed. Roughly a 37% increase. Layer 456 on top and you get 1678.2. Which is almost 70% increase from stock. So you can see where this leads... and why big tires can be spun pretty easy without a huge increase in power.

Anyway, totally your call. I will have both ;-)

The gears won't really allow you to accelerate any faster, just hold gears and tow heavier loads better, shift easier and stay in the power band a bit more.

I imagine you could get a considerable amount of gain on top of the SC gain with an aftermarket header back setup. The stock exhaust pipe has a crushed section underneath the driver side which is definitely restrictive with FI.

Yea, I see positives to both, but definitely can't drop $10k on mods at once. I will eventually have both but I may contemplate which to do first after a few people get these babies installed.

For sure, I removed that and the second set of (cold start) cats already... It made a difference NA, but should have more impact under boost. I mainly did it for the improved clearance.


There is a guy in TX who can dyno tune these supposedly with a stock ECU and I'll probably try that as soon as I get one. Not to make more power really, but just to verify all is well with the AFR...

Not enough info yet...

The URD is probably more of a tuner kit... probably capable of way more power. Runs off a piggyback ECU with some type of learning capability. Which may or may not be more flexible.

The magnuson is more of an OEM plug and play kit. Runs off the stock ECU with a canned tune. Less power potential overall but probably plenty for a stock engine.

Big factor will be which one can build clean boost faster for this application. Each compressor is unique and sized for different applications. If you spin a given model outside of it's range.. it can produce more heat than it should...
 
I won't change my mind. I'm likely ditching this platform entirely.



I know what you saw in Baja, but it would be really awesome from your part (aside from already contributing so much) if and when you get a Raptor, that you are as transparent on DD reliability with that Ford as you have been bluntly so with the 4R. Just a request from an aspiring to-be Raptor owner.

I can't foresee myself ever getting product, either to test, or out of my own pocket, that I wouldn't be brutally honest about. I tend to be a tad un-diplomatic about what I think of certain things, although always with an emphasis on what I think isn't good but could be improved upon (offer up a solution with your criticism).

I'm all for more power but I would sink $10g's on a supercharger system. I can do a whole lot more shit to my 4runner with $10 grand. But different strokes for different folks.

I find your response the most interesting, because you were absolutely obsessed with minor gains, more than any of us. I think ultimately you have to weigh mechanical gains, with functional gains.

The upgraded URD kit for the older 4.0L put down 420 rwhp on rwd Tacoma, so I'm curious to see what their numbers are.
 
dont get me wrong ... I would love to have one BUT !!!! I can just regear and buy a rear bumper and a really nice winch; and be at the same price range.

Supercharger power / 300whp / all out speed rig isnt want I have pictured for this car. My next vehicle on the other hand I have plans for that one ( its a bowtie / holden and ends with SS ). When we're talking in speed.

But I know how bad ass supercharged 4runner can be... Gadget; I've known about since the late 90's ... when he and my friend was at a horsepower war / quarter mile contest ... on the 4runner platform. Gadget had a bad ass 4runner running low 1/4 mile times. My friend ran a 13 flat at 50mph an hour in a awd 4runner at Palmdale raceway which is 2700ft above sea level... but that some old memories...
 
I understand why people spend big bucks for horsepower. I do. As an engineer though I now only enjoy building what does not exist, and only because it's needed and does not exist! For me, there are way too many other factory options out there if I want to go fast. Same for torque.

I Agree. If nothing else the Tundra or the LC200 is probably money better spent. Both have proven faster than a Raptor in actual races in the desert and very reliable. Although the 2010 4runner put a faster time in the Baja 1000 than the new Raptor did, so... that's not really saying much. The Raptor is fast in a 1/4 mile. Slow in desert racing - WAY to many broken parts for an overland vehicle to me, but I understand why it's alluring. You'll never see one in Africa for that reason alone. But we don't live in Africa. You can probably get Amazon delivery next day in almost the entirety of north america.

Why don't you ask Canguro. They beat the raptor by 4 hours in the last Baja 1000. In a lc200. Or Toyota. Won the class prior year in a tundra. And beat the raptor in this year's mint 400. The nice thing about race results - they're not subjective. The raptor owns lots of DNF s to go with a few good finishes.
