2011 4runner Brake Pads question

Hi,

I just replaced front and rear brakes on my 2011 4runner today. After I was done, I noticed that there was a clip that was attached to one of the old rear brake pads (picture enclosed). After watching many videos, nobody addresses this clip. What is it for and is it needed? If so where does it go?

That is designed to squeal when the pad wears down to even with that tab. Its more of a wear indicator for your ears.

As previously noted, that's a wear indicator. It will cause a chirping noise when it hits the rotor when your pad wears down. It's usually positioned on the inside caliper such that forward rotation of the wheel pulls it toward the pad rather than away. That said, I've seen it put on both ways and it's probably fine so long as it doesn't contact anything.

I didn't put these clips on the back brakes. Do I need to redo everything and put them on?

If you inspect your brake pads every so often, when you rotate your tires, you won't need those tabs. I'm sure those were invented for people who never check anything. It lets the driver know when the pads are about to be gone and it will be metal to metal soon.

What pads?

What pads did you install? Typically a set of 4 pads will include 2 with wear indicators to be installed one on each side. I change pads before they get any where near worn to those indicators...

I installed both front and rear brake pads. After finishing, I picked up one of the old rear brake pads and saw the clip in the picture. I never noticed the clip while I was changing the brakes. I thought OMG do I have to redo everything to put these clips in. Thanks to everyone for the responses.

I have 70K miles. I was starting to hear squealing noises when I hit the brakes. I did notice that I had a bit of pad left while replacing the brakes but I already purchased the pads and had time to replace them.
