2011 4runner - does your cruise control suck too?

Mine does it too. Very annoying at times. Even my 16 year-old daughter noticed it. Never had this problem with 2 different Pathfinders and it's not present in our Highlander.

You just aren't going to pick up on issues like this during a test drive.

Shame on Toyota for not addressing this yet.

I like the cruise control on my 5th gen better than my 3rd gen. The 3rd gen always downshifts like crazy because of the lack of HP. But the 5th gen seems to be a lot smoother to me?

You gotta be kidding me...so are you suggesting that there is a problem with the Toyota CC? I've never been in a car that is so aggressive with the downshifting than on my 4 runner. Do you think this is unit specific?

I have not gone through the thread....but.....I use my cruise every time on the highway and I have not had a single issue with it. When I set the speed it locks in and does not move. I'm not in the mountains by any means but for normal driving it does want I would expect it to do.

Agreed, when on a normal flat highway with only slight inclines my cruise control does it's job, however on steeper hills, downshifting twice at 80MPH:wow2:

My only complaint against the CC is that it can't be used at low speeds, eg down to 10-15mph. I would like to use it like off road on longer easy trail sections (level 1-2) so I don't get a heavy foot. Just like what we used to use a throttle lock for in the 'good old days'.

Here's another good reason to offer a 6sp manual transmission. My 99 5sp manual SR5 pulls one hill near me stuck in 5th in CC and drops from 70mph to 66mph at the top of the hill (puny 3.4L V6). Since it is a manual it cannot shift and that speed reduction is acceptable to me with no engine lugging taking place. My 11 TE shifts twice on the same hill and tops it at 75mph (automatic with the 4.0L V6). Its like a runaway going from 2,000rpms to about 4,000rpms. For what?

Resurrecting this thread, because it seems like the most comprehensive that my search turned up. Also, if anyone has found a solution please let me know.

My 2013 purchased last September exhibits all of this behavior. I've had a variety of cars and not one of them (even a rental hyundai) had such poor control algorithms. It is very disconcerting when the truck down shifts, and accelerates. Sure it may top out at 5 over the setting, but it doesn't feel like it, so I end up disengaging the cruise so that I am in control.

Not using cruise control is unacceptable. I have a 12 mile commute with about 9 miles on a straight shot with long gradual hills at 65 mph. I prefer to move to the right, set the cruise, and not fool with anything.

I'm going to try to do something about it. I've opened a complaint ticket regarding this (#14012190847) with Toyota customer experience. They referred me in for a service visit to the local dealer. I urge anyone that is dissatisfied with the cruise control to do the same. Might be an exercise in frustration, but the only way to get them to fix it is to document the problem. I will update when the dealer inspects.

Get used to it, or regear your diffs. Toyota is never going to do anything to fix it. It's the same crappy system as the second gen Tacoma, but worse with the T4R's power to weight ratio, or really, torque at cruising RPMs to weight ratio.

Any resolution? I noticed it today on my new to me 2012. It's really bad and way over accelerates when cresting a hill.

i talked to a toyota master tech about mine when i had bought it after my first road trip to the mountains.. he said that they've tuned it to hold in 5th gear longer so it doesn't shift to 4th from 5th a lot.. and that's all finE and dandy.. but what they forgot to do was tone down how it shifts to 3rd when you lose a good 5mph cuz it's holding it in 5th longer (they might as well have tuned it to allow a big speed drop when the vehicle is on an incline).. so then the vehicles tries to catch up and goes a lil too far with it LOL.. i've gotten used to it and i usually shift it down to 4th as i approach a hill where i know it'll act up.

in my eyes.. toyota tried to make it better and improved in one area, but severely suffered in following through with the rest of the CC tuning. even though i'm a cruise control fan on long drives, it's not a biggie. if they came out with a tune update i would gladly take it though LOL

Since the cruise does nothing for gas mileage (foot works much better) a simple solution for the highway is to use 4th gear.

Return of the manual transmission would be the ultimate solution for me.
I realize that's not gonna happen. I would love to have a 6 speed manual with 6th geared to the moon for mileage. Owner would have to be warned to shift to 5th in hilly terrain. Then come the law suits from owners who ruin their transmissions by failing to downshift.
