Similar Experience

The cruise control in my 04 4runner seemed far more acurate than my 2011 limited. There is considerably variation especially on hills. My experience is based on 15K miles on my 2011. With today's technology, I am surprised at their lack of consistency.

Yep, got my only speeding ticket in the 5th after it accelerated to 82 just over the crest of a hill last year in New Mexico on VC.

I had the Cruise set on 77 and the speed limit was 70. My Valentine radar detector went off the same time the cop pulled the trigger on his radar gun! Ties go to officer of the law!

In New Mexico the speeding ticket for 12mph over was only $90 so it wasn't too bad and it was mail in. Same speeding ticket here in TX cost about twice that!

Geeeeez Harper... you didn't pull out the OBD II tool to show that the cruise control data was set at 77 with no throttle depression? I figured you would have technically talked yourself out of that ticket :jk:

I concur- our '10 runners CC sucks and cant hold a speed, especially on hills. My '10 Crewmax with larger than stock tires does just fine.

It's the worst cruise control I've had. Now that I have my handling issues resolved, this is my biggest gripe. What I don't get is that when the speed drops off, it's starts to recover just fine with a slow acceleration and no gear drop. Then I guess the computer decides the recovery isn't quick enough, and it's hammer time. If they would just let recover at a constant rate, it would be perfect.

When going up a hill my cruise control overcompensates and "floors it". I have remarked to passengers how annoying it is. I never used cruise control until recently, so I'm not entirely sure if this is normal for all cars or not.

Drove to vt this week thru the mountains on I 89... Mine acted this way, I shut it off and just kept driving with my foot...

Indeed, the cruise control on my '11 Limited sucks as well. I feel like they lifted the tech right of the 80s playbook or something. My '02 Pathfinder's cruise control was rock solid and never called for the dramatic downshifting and overspeeding that this thing does. Hate it, hate it, hate it. The tranny is a little weird too. Seems like it almost wants to hunt sometimes. I don't know if it's Toyota trying to make them so smart to save fuel that it overthinks itself or what, but it is kind of annoying. Other than those niggles, I'm enjoying the vehicle...

This is one of the many things I hate about my 4Runner.

Slight inclines or declines with a bend to them can get pretty dicey.

The whole point of cruise control is to maintain a specific speed. I'm not surprised to hear users report this damned thing getting them a ticket.

Ok guys, I am opening this end back up. My mom has a 2010 Lexus RX 330. I know it is not the same but the gadgets under the hood are very similar. HER CAR DOES NOTNHAVE THIS ISSUE. IN FACT, IT PERFORMS LIKE MANY OF THE GERMAN CARS I HAVE HAD.

I am going to take Reata to the Lexus dealer and see what they think and if they have any similar problems with the Lexus version of the cruise control. It seems to be that if. They would just include an altimeter chip in the thing, with appropriate calculations, that they get could this to work.

I asked my dealer about it and he said he hadn't heard that problem before but would be willing to take a look. I will let you know how it goes, but I can tell you it is a very irritating feature of this vehicle. In fact, it is the only thing I can find that I truly hate.

Anyone else experiencing this?

I am definitely experiencing this problem. My T4R, with the lift and tire size, struggles on the highway, downshifting at the slightest incline. The cruise control will cause a one or two gear downshift and then will overshoot the set speed by 5 mph or more before settling back down. Overpasses are really bad because it will zoom over the crest and into the down side, when it will overshoot up to 10 mph.

The CC on mine is, without a doubt, the worst CC I've ever seen. My old Honda Pilot never varied more than 1 mph under any driving conditions. And that includes plains, mountains, whatever. Same thing for my Accords and Civic. Heck, even my old '73 Mercury had more accurate cruise control than my 5th Gen. I think Toyota just got lazy on this.

My experiences are similar, even without real mods.

Overshooting the set CC speed is grounds for a ticket as I like to toe the line. I've given up on using the CC so far.

The CC is indeed aweful. My TSX is near perfect when it comes to CC and my old Xterra was similar to the TSX.

I wonder if this is something we all need to start complaining about? MY assumption is this has been going on for a while with most Toyotas.

Reata, although Toyota owns Lexus, I think the disconnect between the 4runner and RX is pretty big. Lexus engineers things very differently and to a higher standard. Their focus is also much higher on comfort and easy driving.

I stopped using mine as well because as others have said, it sucks. I figured the problem will be solved when I sell my 4Runner and get a different vehicle.
