Yeah, no kidding! Escalades, brand new, are around 70-80k. For a fancy suburban. Really, almost all vehicles are priced way out of peoples budgets. I want a new truck, a ford superduty( I know, not a Toyota, but I tow heavy), but 50-60k is just way too much. 10 years ago a company I once worked for bought a superduty fully loaded for 29k out the door. Now they are double. Half-ton trucks are 40-50k new. Not for the common man anymore. Too bad vehicles are not like computers-they get faster and cheaper every year.

Hence why i dont ever want to buy a new car, as most of those cars listed will depreciate quite fast because they are not worth what those damn price tags say they are, even the LC, $70k for what, 15mpg, some leather 20% more space than a $30k cheaper 4Runner??? (and the 4runner at $40k isnt exactly "cheap")

The LC is made more for the rest of the world. They are very popular in extreme climates.
The LC Prado (GX) is the more reasonable alternative!
Thai - I don't think it is fake wood. Most of the wood Toyota/Lexus uses is make by the Yamaha Piano Co. The wood has a glass like finish and can look fake, unless something has changed. The GX uses a rare African wood called Bubinga.
After a little research, you may be right about the LC's trim. I can not get a definite answer. Many people have complained.

But, you have to figure a few stuff in there John: a big V8, much heavier duty frame (they are the biggest frame LC has ever had!), more HD suspension parts, a much cleaner underbody (= much greater protection), a lot more sound deadening, and of course the interior materials. Do i agree with a $70k pricetag? No, but inflation and weak dollar (or whatever it is that we're suffering from) have much to do with it also.
Lexus uses real wood. Toyota has NEVER used real wood in any of their vehicles. Apparently, Toyota is keeping this tradition alive with the Land Cruiser, no matter the cost! Trust me, YOU NEED TO TAKE A LOOK AT IT!! Toyota tried to copy non-glossy wood (maybe copying Land Rover's REAL non-glossy wood??), but failed miserably! Knowing you Koz (and how particular you are with luxury stuff), you will probably pee in your pants from laughing so hard!!
I did! It looks horrendously bad...even for fake wood! Don't get me wrong, the rest of the SUV is very nice...very tight fit & finish with good materials inside. (Note, the interior materials could be better, esp. given the pricetag, but it is decent.) I won't kick it out of my garage if Toyota gave it to me...but, still, at that price range, i am disappointed that Toyota could not go the extra mile for these owners.

the reason LX/LC doesnt have the HIDS and GX does is that if you notice on the caddys and the GX, the projector is lower in the headlight housing thus complying with height requirements for the HIDS.
If toyota redesigned the headlights to put the lens lower, then yes i would bet cha the LX and LC would have HIDS.
Look at the headlights on the monster QX 56

Has anyone read the latest Car and Driver (March 2011)? They have a comparison test of the GX460 against the Land Rover LR4, Audi Q7, BMW X5, and the Acura MDX.
The GX came in dead last. Car and Driver really beat it up pretty badly. The only good thing that really said was that it had good offroad abililty, on par with the LR4. They also said it was quiet and cushy on the highway and had a good radio. But damn, they bashed it otherwise. Ouch!

I know we're picking nits here but I think its relatively amusing that we're discussing one of the most capable, pedigreed, and world renown off road vehicles, and your criticizing it because of its wood trim. Kinda like complaining that a Ferrari gets bad gas mileage.

Well, the Mercedes G550 has bi-Xenons...and trust me, the G550 is NOT lower than any TLC or LX. It is all in the auto-leveling and where it is pointed. Caddy Escalades also come with optional LEDs headlights...and those are vertically oriented.
Why can't you have cake AND eat it too?? Why must an off-roader costing $70,000+ come with ridiculously fake wood?? I would be more than happy if it came with stainless steel or aluminum trim. But, if you're gonna put fake stuff in your top-of-the-line SUV, then make it convincing. You feel as if Toyota did not go the extra mile for its customer. THAT is my point. Do you see anyone complain about the fake wood in a Corolla? Your analogy is way off.
I'm playing "devil's advocate" here, but it's not really. A Ferrari is built around one core principal...go fast around a track. Everything else including fuel consumption is secondary to that core function. A LC is built around one core principal....go anywhere reliably and all other features including trim material are secondary to that purpose.
I do agree though that faux wood is a strange choice. Though, if I had $70k lying round, faux wood wouldn't stop me from buying it.

A Ferrari is fast. I agree. It drinks gas. A Lambo is fast. It drinks gas. Porsche 911 Turbo is fast. It drinks gas. All three drink gas a lot.
A Land Cruiser is capable off-road. A G-wagen is capable off-road. A Range Rover is capable off-road. All three have 4x4 systems. All three are strongly built. BUT, ONLY one of them come with crappy fake wood...the other two have beautifully made REAL wood.
The reason why i say your analogy is wrong is because the sports car above drink a lot of gas because their engines (the "soul" of a sports car) require it to perform its primary function (to go fast). The TLC, G-wagen, and RR are capable off-road due to their construction and 4x4 systems. The wood planks are luxury add-on that are the STANDARD for the class of vehicles that the TLC is in. It is kind of like if the Ferrari came with cheap vinyl seating from your grand-daddy's garage sale instead of ultra-high end leather or suede materials on the Recaro seats. Should a Ferrari owner be OK with cheap vinyl seats (aka butt sweat!!) just because it can go fast and drink a lot of gas while its competitors come with nice leather Recaro seats?????
What is standard in Land Cruiser's class? What SHOULD you get for a $70k vehicle? Would i be at least a bit annoyed that a car costing half its price (around $35-40k) have real wood?? (Lexus RX) Hell, most cars above $40k have real wood.
Would this stop me from buying one? No, but it would annoy me. And it would annoy me to have to explain to everyone who steps into my car about it...since it looks REALLY REALLY REALLY FAKE...it may actually be so fake that it attracts people's attention! I noticed it immediately when i first testdrove it. Why did Toyota do that?
In fact, for other reasons also, but i would probably spend an extra $10-15k (since i am already spending a butt load of cash) to get the Lexus LX570 if i had to go this route.

All luxury vehicles lose value quite a bit. I have looked on Ebay. Trust me, a LX will fall in value like everyone else, esp. with the economy the way it is and rising gas prices. My brother last year sold his 2001 LX470 with 65k miles...for a whopping $11k. They don't hold much better value than its competition. Now, a Corolla holds value. A Civic holds value. A Camry or Accord holds value. But, a gas-guzzling $60k+ SUV? Nope.
You just got your GX. If you had to sell it in the future, then good luck in getting it at "KBB" value. In fact, go to your local Carmax or any dealership and just ask for the value on your car if you had to trade it in. Be prepared to crap in your pants!
