2011 LE JBL Sub Removal

Hey guys,

Let me preface by saying I've searched the site and I'm a noob when it comes to speakers


I've looked all over and can't seem to find a step by step instruction on how to remove the sub from my 2011 LE w/Nav. I want to replace the stock sub with a Kicker 40CWD82.

Does anyone now how to remove the panel covering the stock speaker and could anyone give me some advice on how to install the new sub?

Good question, and not covered before really, I think you have to remove the entire panel. When I looked around it was stated its in the repair manual, I could never actually open that myself.

Thanks. I think using a newer sub will make the stock speakers sound fine. I just want a little bit more kick than the stock JBL

4th gen stuff should apply. I did a swap on my 2003. Jut be sure the sub you use is a slim mount sub. There isn't much depth in the factory enclosure.

Did you change the amp?

And thats the prob. Everyone is like use the 4th gen, but I'm a noob and I know someone in a 5th gen has done it haha just a matter of finding someone to show me.

Nope. Used the factory JBL amp. Swapped the factory sub with a Rockford Fosgate. Sound was definitely improved over factory.

I'm telling you, the 5th will be nearly identical to the 4th. I'd bet right down to the screw and clip placement.

Ok great. Did you get the 8 inch? If you don't mind could you send me an amazon link or link to wherever you bought it. If it works in yours I'd feel confident trying to install it in mine.

Is it plug and play?

That's the one that I got. It was pretty much plug and play. I did have to cut the wires and add ends to hook it into the amp. Also, the screw holes didn't line up, but you can screw through the plastic. Just don't over tighten it. Use a little silicon to keep it air tight (before you mount it, like you're making a gasket). Pretty straight forward.

Great! When you finish, please post a detailed writeup! I've been debating changing mine out of a long time. Also, did you change your dash speakers?

I didn't change the stock speakers. I spoke with crutchfield today. They said that putting a sub in with a stock amp isn't going to give you much power. I was told to replace the stock amp with an amp that could carry all the speakers and a new sub or add an amp just to power the sub. I'm kinda at a loss for what to do.

I went to auto audio and they told me it'd be roughly 500 for a new amp and an 8 inch speaker installed. I may do that just because I don't know how to wire all this new stuff.

It's called an up-sell. I'm in technology sales. I know it when I see it . Swapping it out there are literally 4 wires. I can't find it on my phone but the wiring diagram will tell you which ones are +/-. One pair for each connection on the sub (it's dual voice coil so it's like connecting two speakers in one).

That sub is 2 ohm when wired properly so it matches factory. You will not get a ton of additional output but it will be tighter, play a little lower and be a touch louder since it's more efficient.

If it's not enough, you can always pay someone to add an amp later.

I'm not selling anything! If you're going through the trouble of taking shit apart and upgrading the sub, add an amp and a sub volume control. You're wasting your time with the stock JBL.

Taking off the side panel is easy. Hardest part is removing the back seat and from there, everything is common sense. You can see or pretty much figure out what you have to remove.

I recently did the same except I used the wires going to the stock sub to high level input add-on to aftermarket amp then to a truck-boxed 12inch. Removed the stock sub completely.

That 4th gen guide was a good start. You'll need to remove the step panels from the rear passenger side doorway, the seatbelt, the 3 bolts from the rear panel and the cover panels for the 3rd row seating. I was lazy and didn't remove the actual 3rd row seats so it took some yelling and prying to get the rear panel to bend and lift out.

On the 5th Gen you have to take out the 2nd row seat. Really dumb design. One of the seat mounts actually passes through a hole in the side panel. I could not believe they would design it like that. Was irritated and almost just cut the plastic panel but ended up removing the seat. It's not difficult but the seat is heavy and it's just plain dumb. I don't even have a 3rd row.

I guess if I am going to replace my dash speakers, my sub, and add some sound deadening I should do it all in the same weekend. Looks like it's gonna take a while!:bounce:

As far as removing the Right rear plastic trim cover here's who will know: [MENTION=120209]tigger[/MENTION]; he's the real deal!!

As far as installing a great sub in it's place these are 'TOP SHELF' Here's the specs:

Car Audio - Stealthbox® - Toyota - 4-Runner - Toyota 4-Runner '03-'09

I've used JL subs and these don't rob your cargo area! It's a ten sub, can handle 500W trus RMS and runs at 2 ohms!
