And yeah, that 5-speed tranny is uber strong...i believe that it came from Mercedes...i think that my G-wagen had that tranny! I guess officially, the Wrangler can ford 30 in of water now...better than FJ's 27.5 inches.

a wrangler that gets in the 20's??? i'll believe it when i see it. i saw a sticker on a wrangler years ago and it said 9/14 for the milage. thats always stuck with me. terrible waste of gas.
 
They ADVERTISE it at 20. It won't get 20. No JK I have driven stock or modified with different gear sets has. Hell, when my TJ was on 29s with 3.73 gearing I got 17 city on a good day with no wind and when I was light on the gas. Right now with my 06 wrangler on 33s and 3.73s (automatic trans) I get around 12-13 in the city..my 4runner on 32s doesn't get much better. People will need to realize that Jeeps are bricks on wheels with a tent strapped to the back and unless they put a diesel in it, they won't get great mpg. The new pentastar V6 is already having issues with the VVT.

When you drive a wrangler, you get used to seeing this.

I'm just glad to see the stronger engine and better auto tranny. I just traded in my 2010 JK Unlimited for a 2010 4Runner (Certified Pre-Owned).

The "minivan" engine in the JKU was PATHETIC, and so was the auto transmission. Basically, the combination SUCKED something awful and I'm glad to be done with it.

LOVE our 4Runner though!

Try having that old 4speed auto behind the 4.0L I6 the 97-06 wranglers have. It's pretty sluggish and bogs the motor down. I have the combo on my TJ and I would need 5.13 gears to run my 33s to get my powerband back into the stock range it had with 3.73s and 30s. The 42RLE trans is a pig behind any motor IMO, it sucked it the liberty too. The 0.69 OD ratio was just way too tall.
 
Meh, if your getting a wrangler, the automatic shouldnt matter, cause the manual is the only way to go in it!

Yes, traditionally, manual is the way to go, even off-road. However, i actually prefer automatic over manual off-road. Why? There are already way too many things to watch for while off-roading (e.g. placement of tire, how much to goose the gas pedal, two-feet crawl, & enjoying scenery) that it is really not worth it for a manual tranny. Granted, if you climb up and down boulders all day, then the extra low crawl ratio of the manual is worth it. Otherwise, i would skip the manual altogether.

Now, in a sports car or drag racing, i would agree with you JohnsD90. But, in off-roading, more and more people prefer automatic tranny over the manual.

I'm sorry to tell you this, but my automatic wrangler will do anything offroad faster, easier and more efficiently than a manual can. I'll save the manual for a sports car.

Didnt realize the point of offroading was finishing fastest ;)

I'm not really an offroader, just a ball buster, but i guess i am just used to CJ7's and early wranglers, old cherokee's, and real Land Rovers.

During a long stretch of freeway from Tahoe back to LA, I got 21 mpg. My best tank range was 315.2 miles. For a vehicle that's shaped like a brick, and a tall one at that, I think that's pretty good. I think the new engine does make a big difference"

Simple. Want more cargo, take out the rear seat! I want the 2 door but i don't know how my kids will fit back there in the back seat!

I'd consistently get get 16-17mpg in the Defender with the 3.9l V8 and the 5 Speed on 32" AT's, on mixed town and a little bit of highway driving, and the Defender is actually shaped like a brick with almost pointy edges the wranglers (atleast the newer ones) have a bit more curves to them. Never did an all highway tank in it.

I remember my brother's Discovery SII getting in the low-teens...so, you are getting pretty MPGs in your Defender.
