2013 4R Trail Edition Tough?

My 13' 4runner got rear ended today by a Toyota Highlander. I was at a complete stop and "BAM" the Highlander hit me. It felt like the rear of the truck was smashed in. I got out and looked and hmmm no damage really. The Highlander had a gash in the front bumper. It appears she slammed into the tow hitch receiver. She was maybe traveling at 40 mph tops. My question is does the hitch receiver come off? or is it welding to the frame? anyone know the clearance between the spare tire and the hitch receiver? The hitch looked like its pushed onto the tire on one side.

If she was going 40, both vehicles would be leaving on wreckers. The tow hitch is bolted to the rearmost frame cross member, under the bumper cover and there is very little clearance between it and the spare.

Yeah I'm probably over-exaggerating. Thanks for the reply. So it is replaceable? I wonder if I should file a claim?
 
I'd expect frame damage from that kind of impact to the tow hitch. As [MENTION=78273]Jeremy556[/MENTION] said, it bolts to the frame cross member. Get it checked out.
 
I haven't had a chance to take my truck in to the body shop to have the frame inspected. I wanted to see for my self if there's any damage I can see my self. I went to try and lower the spare tire for the first time. Anyone know if its normal for the the spare tire lowering tool to go in at an angle? I tried sticking in straight but it didn't line up. Now I'm wondering if the accident caused this.

You were rear-ended, let the other persons insurance take care of the bill.....
Sounds like you really don't know what you have damaged from reading all post up to the 2:01AM one....
Don't unbolt or tamper with anything, take it in!

Rod goes in at an angle!

+1 I was rearended in my 4th gens and let the insurance take care of it. They told me that they'd change the hitch regardless with fear there was damage and wouldn't take a chance of me towing something and it failed.
 
Last question. Any collision body shop will be able to give me an estimate right? Or is there like a frame specialist I need to take the truck too?

Those look like where 2 of those plastic rivets would go (look around the lips of your fender liner). I would say the rivets let go before the plastic cap did, saving it from further damage. They're about $3 or $4 a piece max. I don't "see" any bowing or bends in that frame member. You may have just gotten incredibly lucky. I'm also guessing if the car that hit you didn't deploy their airbags the impact speed was well under 40mph.

Of course I would still have a body shop check it out for your peace of mind. The other driver's insurance should cover that.

Did you file a police report? I guess if two places are telling you it's fine you have no recourse (how do they explain the missing clips?). However, I'd want a police report in case something comes up down the road that is a direct result of the incident so that you can file a claim.

No I didn't file a police report. All I did was exhange insurance/information. I tried to file a police report but they said the incident would have to have a $700 or more worth of damage. This was the next day after the accident when I called the non emergency police line. After taking it to two body shop I get no estimate because of the lack/no damage.
 
Can someone kindly post some pics of your spare tire clearance between the tires itself and the tow hitch. Just for comparison and peace of mind.
