Yes, it's part of the environmental control system. The door opens automatically when the cabin temp reaches a preset temp. Didn't your dealer go over this with you on delivery day? It's one of the options s they're supposed to go over when they set everything up in Techstream

Hi duckman,
Under what circumstances is this cargo hatch 'just opening'; is it running, engine shut-off, opens when going over big bumps...etc? Rgds!

I sorry gentlemen the question was not worded right! What I meant was is the door suppose to open up with power or buy itself when I go to open it? The door/hatch is not opening by itself anytime unless i open it. Sorry for the confusion although I learned something new today.

Hi duckman,
Okay; makes more sense worded that way! When the cargo hatch release is squeezed, the hatch should travel upward 'by itself'. There are two Lift-gate 'lift supports'; one at each side of the door. These struts are charged with a gas (likely dry nitrogen) which is compressed when the hatch is closed. Additionally, these cylinders are filled w/ hydraulic fluid, and 'valved' much like your shocks are. This fluid (and orifice) control how fast the hatch travels open when the door handle is squeezed. However, over time the seals do wear out; allowing the pressurized gas to escape, rendering the support(s) incapable of assisting in the hatch operation. They can last quite a few years but occasionally the gas may escape prematurely, and so that 'strut' will need replacement. ...Pretty sure your 2015 doesn't use a prop rod to hold the hood up!

2014 and 2015 do not have prop rods. I nice surprise after years of prop rodded chevys

'ALL' of the 5'th generation 4Runners (2010-2015) utilize 'Gas charged strut-type' support lifts under the hood! "Nice feature"!

Yes that was really what I was asking if any or all 4-runner rear hatch/door have automatic door that with a touch of the button opens the hatch by itself without me helping it.

hmmm.... did you buy it used? and if so, was there a carfax check on that? Did you have a shop perform any mods around the hood? I'm curious why you don't have this feature.

Does have. Ipad must have auto corrected a typo and made it doesn't. Anyway mine does have the struts.
