Overland SUV of the Year - Runner Up: Toyota 4Runner Trail Edition

For the second year in a row, the Toyota 4Runner Trail Edition has taken our runner-up spot for Overland SUV of the Year. Although certainly biased more towards the street than the Jeep Wrangler, the winner of this year’s Overland SUV award, the 4Runner is no laughing matter on the trail. In fact, those looking for a little less trail capability, and more on-road comfort would likely be happier in a Toyota 4Runner.

But it still came in second to the Jeep Wrangler as it has done in other comparisons to the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Totally off road the Wrangler should be top of the list but as a true Overland Vehicle it's the 4runner for the win. In the US anyways. :driving:

Agreed. I just traded in my 4 door Wrangler for the 4R. The reason is that the 4r is so much better on the road/highway. For long distances on road the Wrangler is not much fun. The 4R is good through everything.

Decent article. Thanks for sharing. If you compare stock to stock I would agree that the wrangler is better as an overland vehicle. But as many members have shown the 4runner can be turned into a very capable overland vehicle and eventually surpass the Wrangler. I think the Wrangler has some limitations in that category due to its size and interior configuration. In many other parts of the world, where overlanding is a necessity, you see more 4runner style vehicles than Jeeps. If we are talking about rock crawling...different story.
