I've towed with nothing but stock with a brake controller and the rv I have is 4800lbs. The trailer you're considering should be easier since it will be significantly lighter. I also did the move from NY to WA for PCS with my wife in 2011. We did the I90 route the whole way. Rushmore and Yellowstone are definitely good stops. The Shedd aquarium in Chicago is a great stop, then we hit some caves in Wisconsin. After we hit Minnesota we started stopping at welcome stations at each state and found a whole slew of other things to see. Other stops to consider, the spam museum in Austin, MN (it's a little gimmicky but free and right off I90), the 56ft tall Jolly Green giant statue in Blue Earth, MN, Badlands National Park loop is pretty wild (also free) and the Wall Drug store is super kitschy but just a must see cause there is nothing else. In addition to Rushmore, the black hills national forest wildlife loop is awesome and up close views of buffalo and pronghorn but you'll need to drop the trailer to drive that. Deadwood, SD is fun and has some old west folklore to it. Devil's tower is a two hour detour when you first get into Wyoming. I thought it was worth the trip but I don't have kids. After that Yellowstone was our last major stop. You can pick up tire chains/cable chains for as little as $70 on etrailer. If you ski or snowboard in WA you'll need them regularly anyway.
