Two days after taking delivery of my truck, I sent it to the detailing shop for 3 full days to get a few things done. I decided to get a full front end clear bra installed. It covers the full hood, full fenders, full bumper, mirrors, headlights and fogs, and A-pillars. The film they used was Suntek, which carries a 5-year warranty against fading, yellowing, cracking, etc. Pretty much everything except puncture. I also decided to get the paint decontaminated, polished and then had opti-coat applied to ALL surfaces (paint, plastic, you name it). To top if all off, I had them tint the front windows to match the factory tint.

While all of this was not cheap, I think it turned out amazing and I am really happy that I did it! If you live in the tri-state area, these guys are the ones to visit. They will not let you down, as they are total perfectionists.

They also let me use their heated shop and ramps so that I could personally install my new Borla Cat-Back exhaust! That was super cool of them to do. Anyway, here's a glamour shot for you.

I just recently bought a 2014 LE. I have a an appt this Thursday to get the remote engine start installed. Does the vehicle shut off when you approach the truck? And also do you guys think it's worth the cost?

I have the factory remote start. It turns off when you unlock the truck, either from the remote or by grabbing the door handle (annoying). I agree that the OEM one is limiting, but it does what I need it to do, though it is annoying that you have to restart the truck after getting in. I got it cuz I made them throw it in to make the deal and that it is covered under the factory warranty.

That's what I figured. I agree with you! Warranty is key, and also for me I didnt want an extra key fob for my remote start. So I guess I'm stuck with OEM.

New to the forum and first time owning a 4Runner. Just wanted to start off by saying thank you for the wealth of information on this forum. You guys are an amazing brain trust on all things 4Runner. I started lurking in August when it was settled that our next SUV would be a 4Runner. Only question was 2013 or 2014. Because of the memory seats and a few other changes to the interior, we decided on the '14. Guess you could call me the proverbial soccer mom.

Between using this forum (OTD thread) and TrueCar.com, we got our '14 Limited Attitude Black, Redwood seats, 3rd row, running boards, exhaust tip, and crappy all weather mats for under invoice. Couldn't be more pleased with our purchase. We originally had one on order from a dealer in Cincinnati but ended up picking the same vehicle up out of South Carolina. We've driven over 2000 miles in two weeks and loving it more and more.

Thanks again for all the information. Based on other threads, we ordered the Weathertech floor mats. Looking for a better solution for the cargo area using the 3rd row if anyone has suggestions. I don't want to roll up the cargo mat when the 3rd row is in use. I've seen photos where the Highlander had a cargo mat that was split and raised with the seat backs but haven't found one for the 4Runner.

Weathertech does make a cargo mat for 4Rs with third row, though I've never seen one so can't vouch for it. Wouldn't the Highlander cargo mat you saw possibly work?

We have a 2014 Highlander with the split cargo mat. The Highlander third row now has three seats, so the split is ~66/33 instead of 50/50 like the 4Runner. The Highlander mat is indeed awesome since it remains functional even with only part of the third row raised. I haven't seen anything like it for a 4Runner. The closest I know of is the Canvasback liner.

The Highlander OEM cargo mat is exactly what I'm looking for but haven't found one for the 4Runner.

The Aries 3D liner folds which may work ok. Anyone have experience with this mat?

This is what that cargo mat looks like on the 2014 Highlander with the three seat third row. The individual sides velcro to the back of the seat and provides slots for the rear seat pull straps to stick through. You can't see it in the picture, but the entire mat is all one piece. There is a flexible portion that bends down behind the third row seats when they are raised. It is very cool, but I haven't seen anything like it for the 4Runner.

There are pictures of the Canvasback liner I mentioned in this thread. It's not a rubber cargo mat, but it does offer good coverage and has a zipper along the seat division to allow raising just one seat. It also protects the carpeted back of the second row seats.

Wow, that is nice! I didn't realize that the Highlander 2014 was released yet. How are you liking that model? The size was expanded this year, how does it compare to the 4Runner?

You could probably add the lower front cover from the 2014 4runner trail to cover the holes.

I got mi lift, tires and my 6000K HIDs I took this photo during Christmas and these were all the planned mods I had for last year. I'll keep it this way for a bit until I recover from all the Christmas expenses and can do some other mods.

I think Canvasback is your only option. I have it on mine, and its pretty nice.

Wow, that is nice! I didn't realize that the Highlander 2014 was released yet. How are you liking that model? The size was expanded this year, how does it compare to the 4Runner?

We have both a 2014 Highlander Limited and a 2014 4Runner Limited. Probably the only time in my life that I'll ever buy two vehicles on the same day.

We traded in a 2007 Highlander for the 2014, and we absolutely love it as an everyday family hauler. The seats were repositioned so an adult can have legroom in all three rows at the same time, which is great. That third row still has your legs elevated a bit, so it's certainly still better for kids, but an adult can be somewhat comfortable back there now. It also gained much more cargo room behind the third row (relative to our 2007, which was 2 generations ago and a bit smaller). It has a bunch of features that aren't offered on the 4Runner like cruise control radar with three follow distance presets, lane drift monitor, auto bright lights, and triple climate control with individual vents at each seat in rows 2 and 3.

Both our Highlander and 4Runner have the third row, but the Highlander certainly feels like it has more cargo room, especially with the third row up in each. The body on frame design of the 4Runner doesn't let the third row fold down into the floor as nicely as the Highlander. Plus the Highlander has nice cargo bins in the floor including a place to store the cargo pull cover when not in use.

Of course we love the 4Runner too for all of its benefits that are well documented on this site. The 2014 is my third 4Runner, and I don't foresee driving anything different as my daily driver any time soon.

All things considered, the Highlander is a stellar daily driver and road trip vehicle when you've got folks in the second and/or third rows. We take it on most trips. The cruise control radar makes it easy to lock in speed with that car you're following. We take the 4Runner camping, to the mountains, etc. They have distinctly different uses for us, but can both fit family and friends when needed.

You definitely made that salesperson's day buying two vehicles. What a great combination and thanks for the reviews and differences on both. Does your Highlander have the capacity for eight? I love the 4Runner but the Highlander probably would have been a more practical choice. I prefer the height of the 4Runner since I'm 5'2. Guess it's a little dog syndrome. 4Runner definitely fits our style better and I'm thrilled but it would be nice to have both as an option. Enjoy!

No, we have seating for 7. The second row is now two separate seats (rather than a bench) with a little fold-up tray and cup holder in the middle. If you fold the tray down, then smaller kids can just walk between the two seats to get to the third row without folding/sliding the second row seat.

I agree with you about the rubber cargo mat and really wish Toyota would provide the split mat option for the 4Runner. It sacrifices some waterproofing, but adds a ton of convenience since the rubber mat really doesn't roll up very well like the carpet one could. I currently have to remove my rubber cargo mat and pull cover and leave them in my garage when using the third row. It's not very conducive to spontaneous use of the third row while out and about.
