2014 Interior LED Swap

Well I am certain this subject has been discussed a few times by now but I figured I would add a few pictures to anyone wondering what the process involves.

First off I changed the following interior lights:

- Front Map Lights (x2 - 194)
- Center Dome (48SMD Festoon 31mm)
- Bottom Door (x4 - 194)
- Rear Hatch (x2 -12SMD Festoon 31mm)
- Vanity Lights (x2 - 194)
- License Plate (x2 -194)

I ordered every bulb from a seller by the name of JTechNowCom on ebay. I did a small initial order and when the product was sent quick I made a few more orders. So far I am highly impressed with the product and the shipping was very quick from CA area.

All the bulbs fit without issue and the light output is much better than OEM. The only lights that are difficult to remove are the rear hatch. Thanks to another user on here (unknown at this time) it was stated to look for the metal latch on the drivers side of the light (both) and apply pressure here. Sure enough the light released. Overall all I can suggest is take your time, work slow and you should have no problems.

I bought a whole light kit on Amazon, 14 pieces. I didn't use the dome & the map lights. Just too damn bright. The kit included all the interior bulbs, backup & license plate bulbs. $23.95

Yep, forgot about the license plate bulbs! Those are 194 also.

Total cost was $25~ for all
 
Nice work! I have these on my 80-series Land Cruiser. Serious lighting upgrade. For the 4Runner I wanna try the warm white LEDs. The cool whites are too blue, makes the inside feel like a science lab.

Also cheaper than i thought it would cost, might be mod i need to do next.

LOL, I wanted more light due to my tint but I know what you are saying.

Quick and easy little mod. Like I said before, take your time and evaluate each light before pulling them because each location comes out different.
 
Thanks [MENTION=106209]FloridaOccifer[/MENTION]. I was trying for a few minutes to get out the hatch ones and gave up for fear I'd scratch the plastic. Gonna have to go try it later!

Totally agree! Take some pics if you put in the warm ones. I just bought a full kit on ebay of the cools and installed them. While I do think they're better than the dim yellow stock bulbs, I felt like I was going for limo vibes. I found a much brighter (still cool) map light bulb that is much better IMO but am still shopping for the dome and hatch and would love to see the warm ones...

Oh yes, the 48SMD is super bright compared to everything else. I wanted one that would allow me to search for anything I wanted quickly:50cal:.

The center dome has an off switch so if I didn't need it there would be no issues.
 
Question: Has anyone considered red LED's? Night vision is extremely important and I find any use of the map or dome light distracting while driving. Sure, for stationary use the brighter the better but we all know that your child or spouse is gonna want to turn those things on while driving at night. A shoe, a french fry or a pacifier are instant reasons lol. I was thinking that if I do "upgrade" the interior lights it will be with red LED's in the dome and map. I would leave the doors and tailgate white because they could only be used when stopped.

I thought about it, but I think instead of a red LED, you would benefit much more from an LED that is very directional instead (think shooting a concentrated pencil beam straight at your lap). I had factory LED map lights in my old car, and they recessed each diode into a hole; so even though the led was white, there was absolutely zero distraction while driving due to the shielding of stray light. I don't have pictures, but this is how they kind of look like:

On my 4runner I have a downward firing white LED bulb in the rear dome light and it does not seem to bother me much at all when it's on and I'm driving at night. Not sure if it's because I switched over to the LED, or because the dome light is further back and I don't notice it as much. I never turned it on at night when it was just a regular bulb, lol.

However, up front in the map lights, I have 360 degree firing LEDs and they most certainly have some glare to it at night. The only time it does not bother me is if I am driving in a city where the ambient light level is pretty bright from all the street lamps. On a pitch black highway it get's irritating real quick.

I was thinking about that last night, but the problem I came up with was that everything out there seems to be "super-bright-burn-your-retinas-leds™". I turn down my dash lighting to next to nothing especially on long distance drives. I ordered the kit from Amazon to play around with & try & find a workable solution when they let my truck out of the port for good behavior. I'd LOVE to have all the lighting on rotary dials like when I was a tank crewman, but wiring & I don't play well together.

Hey FloridaOccifer, help us out on this thread http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/162994-2014-side-mirror-bulb-access.html have you changed out the Side Mirror Bulbs?

I have this in my "other" vehicle for ops. I can say the light is usable but you have to get adjusted to it. There is no quick transition between the normal light and then a red interior. Keep in mind your dash lights will make the red wash out and less functional.

did my install saturday. love them and are much brighter. just need to get 2 more 194's to do the vanity lights behind the visors
