Thanks for the update. The way you originally described the sound it sounded like a bottom end knock. Hope it gets handled well and all goes smooth with the repair. And they don't try the it's normal line.

got off the phone earlier with the dealership. They created a task number, and have audio recordings of the knocking sound. Next step is to get the engineer out here which will be "sometime in October" All there's left to do is wait

Are they keeping the 4runner until that time or are you driving it ?

they told me to take it back until the engineer comes, but I refused because knowing them once the engineer takes a look at it they'd say something like, you shouldn't have been driving it around cause now it caused more damage.

i'm looking into a lemon law attorney. Under NY state Lemon Law the car has to be at the dealership for 30+ days in order to get your money back, or you have to bring it to the dealer 4 times and after the 4th time, if the problem isn't fixed or solved, you can pursue the lemon law and get an attorney involved.
its just a big headache, I had the car for 4 days and now all this...I don't have enough advil for this sh!t

I got back from the dealer earlier, They told me to take the 4runner back because they can't find anything wrong with the car, "the sound is normal"
I refused to take the truck back.
Just got off the phone with Toyota HQ, they said I'd be contacted back Monday to see if I can get my down payment back and terminate this contract.
A family friend who's an attorney is coming back from vacation thursday. I'll ask him if he knows any attorneys who work with the Lemon Laws in this state if the problem isn't resolved by the end of the week.
This is just bull s&^t they won't even give me a loaner, and told me since I'm not picking up the vehicle today, they're going to charge me to keep it there.

You're probably hearing the same noise a lot of other folks are hearing. I went from a 4th Gen V8 to a 2011 Limited and I never noticed the sound until I was driving around with the radio off one day. From then on, I was focused on the sound. I took it in to 3 dealers and was told the sound was normal.
After about 6 months, I decided to trade the 11' in on a brand new 2014 Trail Premium hoping I just had a dud. During the test drive, guess what happened? The same damn noise!! It annoys the hell out of me but since it happened on both the 4Runners I had, I'm going to say the sound I'm hearing is normal for the 5th Gen V6.
I've tried to record the noise but have been unable to since it's pretty faint.

I have an 08 4runner and had an 08 fj both with the 4.0 They both had a ticking/clattering noise upon start up for the first few minutes. It sounded like diesel clatter. But this is a low end knocking sound, the service manager even acknowledged that this wasn't something that any of the other 4runners had. But the dealership still refuses to "fix" the problem. A 48,000 dollar car shouldn't have this problem...maybe a GMC or a Chrysler but not Toyota

Just got the wife a 2015 limited with 23k on it. I have driven it a few times and we took it on our first little road trip. I noticed it is a slightly louder engine from the start. When we got back I cranked it up the other morning and it sounded like a rod was starting to knock. Pop the hood and start listening and there is definitely noise coming from the valve train (diesel like as it has been described).
I check the oil and what the hell, it is at least a quart low
We literally bought it from Carmax a week ago and I swear the oil was fine when I did my inspection of the vehicle. The oil looked like it was conventional with some miles on it but still clean so I had just planned to change it to synth at the 3k mile mark.
Anyways, it took at least a quart, bottom mark to top maybe more as I was pouring from a 5qt. container and couldn't see the marks. It may have made it ever so slightly quieter but it for sure seemed to smooth it out and make it sound less like solid tappets.
I was honestly a little scared we bought someones junk engine or it had been damaged from oil starvation, but now that everyone says it is normal I feel better. I haven't started really studying the 1GR yet so good to know it has rollers.
I am a little pissed about it being at least a quart low. Anyone else notice when you add oil it seems to get on one side of the stick up towards the full mark? Maybe they thought it was full or they just shorted it a quart, the oil was changed by carmax about 1k miles before we bought it.. so much for their supposedly impressive inspection checklist. Trust but verify.

How do you know what kind of oil it is by looking at on the dipstick? :ybrick:
Did you check the oil while the motor was still cold just after starting it? That doesn't give the oil time to drain back into the pan to get an accurate check. Either check the oil after the vehicle has been sitting for a few hours or drive it, get it fully up to temp, then check the oil 5 minutes or so after turning it off.
The thing holds around 6.5 quarts of oil. Even a full quart low shouldn't change any noise, it will still have full oil pressure.
