2015 or 2016

Hey everyone I am thinking of buying a new 4runner but I can't decide whether I should get a 2015 or a 2016. I know they are the same model and the dealers are willing to sell the 2015s for less than the 2016 but a part of me really want the latest. What would you all do?

I think you will find that not a lot of information is known about the 2016 model yet. If you do not need something immediately, I would wait until more concrete facts come out about the 2016, before making that decision.
Mostly all information you will find on this site about the 2016 model is rumors we all have heard.

To respond to your question seriously, I'd pick the 2016.

Sure you may get a bit of a deal on a 2015. Maybe, maybe not. I have no idea to be honest.

But, is that deal worth having a 1 MY old car, the second you drive off the lot? Your car will be seen at the same value as someone who's owned theirs 11+ months longer than you.

All the info is out on the 2016's. It is the same as the '15's with few color changes. Nothing different between them.

If you are going to keep your 4Runner for a long period of time say more than 5 years, then going for a 2015 and saving the money would be my recommendation.

On the other hand if you are someone that changes vehicles after shorter periods say 1 - 3 years, then a one year younger model will have a better sale/trade-in value and will probably over-ride the money saved by buying a one year older model.

Another factor that comes into play is the lending/rates on vehicles that are older. You'll notice that cars that are 2-3 years old have a better pool of auto financing available, whereas older vehicles have higher financing rates. This comes into picture if 2-3 years from now you decide to sell. A 2016 will be a much more attractive vehicle than a 2015 - to many prospective buyers.

Not sure about Sr5's, but I think most of the Trails have already been sold. There is no major difference between the two that warrants getting one over the other. Just pick the one that is the cheapest

This time next year, a 2015 with 15k miles can be more attractive at resale than a 2016 with 15k miles.

If they're discounting the 2015 thousands (say 2 or 3) vice the 2016, then yeah get the 15. These damn things hold their value so well it likely doesn't matter after 3-4 years which one you choose.
If it's paid off in 5 years, it's still worth 55% of MSRP on the market, so if you can get a discount off msrp, do it.
A 15 and a 16 are the same exact vehicle, they literally didn't update a thing of significance that I can think of... so buying the 16 can easily be looked at as a waste of your money.

This is a very good point that is not often considered.

I want to restate this. I'm in So Cal (Orange County), and picked up the last 2015 Trail Premium in Magnetic Gray in the area. There are a few SR5s and Limiteds, but the next Trail Premium is about 300 miles away. I drove ~60 miles to pick my new truck up yesterday. A tip: I used Edmunds.com to check inventory, which was pretty accurate (as confirmation, I opened many Firefox tabs for each individual Toyota dealership and none had what I was looking for).

This is another good point. 2016 are just about here (some on the lot, some on order), so if I didn't get the discount off MSRP for the 2015 I just purchased, I would have bought a 2016.

But there's another perspective I want to share. 2015-2016 4Runners remind me of 2008-2009 4Runners. They're the last of their respective generations, and when I was in the market for a 2008-2009, the 2009 was priced more than the exact same 2008 (same mileage, same vehicle--with a few minor changes in 2008). As a buyer, it's a cheaper buy for the 2008 than 2009, so something to consider for resale purposes (assuming you can get a deal off MSRP for a 2015).

The Limited seems to have much better features like full time 4wd, MUCH better sound system and REAL LEATHER! But dealers always sell Limited for less than MSRP but the TRD Pros get listed at more.

Folks around here are very concerned with what trim level other people have, so be careful or have thick skin. "Better" is definitely subjective to what you want to do in your 4runner, and if you plan on doing serious modding or not.

That said, I have two close friends that also have 2015s, and I have gotten to ride in both of their 4runners. Like them both. KDSS is nice. The 'fancy' stuff in the Limited is also nice. Those seat ventilators are probably the only thing I am actually jealous of though.

The trail models are rare in certain areas, because that is how Toyota decides to distribute them. Also, they are more expensive than the sr5, so they sell less of them.

If you are buying one, just pick the one you like the most that is in your budget and enjoy it.

that wishes Toyota would make a model that has all the off road capability and options of the Trail AND all the nice accoutrements of the Limited?

For example, on a trail premium the only interior color you can get is black. Seriously? What is this, 1909? “You can have any color you want as long as it’s black”.

I live in SoCal and black interiors are a no-go for this driver.

I understand it will cost more. I’ll pay extra. But perhaps I’m the only one.

You're not the only one. If a particular model requires a black interior (Ford Explorer Sport is another example) it's off my list.
