2015 TE clank/rattle noise going over bumps

I have a 2015 Trail edition and lately I started hearing a clank or rattle noise when going over bumps.
The reason I have only heard it now is because you only hear it with windows open and I haven't had windows open since I bought it in Feb.

It sounds like something is loose and banging.
Possibly the brake pads rattling?
Its not a clunk like the driveline clunk, but more of a clank or rattle noise like 2 parts banging into each other.
Anyone have this?

I tried to search but nothing came up other than the TRD clunk.

check the chains for the spare tire. that might give a high pitch rattle like pads.

Do you have a trailer hitch? Mine was doing that over bumps b/c the pin and slide to raise/lower the ball has a little play in it.

I'd check the exhaust mounts. I also had a rattling when I had a loose skid plate.

I have the factory mount but no hitch currently on.

It drives me nuts. I dont know if something is loose or if its normal.
My FJCruiser never had any noise.

I guess ignorance is bliss. When it getys gotter I'll have the windows closed

Yeah. I'm bringing it in next week for the 5k service. This should give them something to do. Not sure what else they do on a 5k service.

Not sure if that's BS or they really didn't.
I looked under the vehicle and didn't see anything.
I suppose It could be the spare tire or the chain, but it sounds like it's coming from the front area.
So annoying.
I love the feel of the trail edition suspension, but noises drive me nuts.

I have the same noise. Kinda sounds like chains, so I'll try tying up the spare tire chain, but it most definitely sounds like it's coming from the front.

I only hear it when going very slowly, with the windows down.

It sounds as if the noise is repeatable. If so, find a location near the dealership where it WILL occur. GO WITH the tech on the test drive. They are NEVER going to hear it otherwise. Hell, they're probably not even driving it.

Interesting thread only because I have this same sound. But I believe i've located mine as being part of my suspension as I only hear at bombs and intial movement of the vehicle. I've check bolts, everything and from what I can gather its just the inital movement of my spring/coil because after that one movement or bump I never can really hear it. I've triple checked all my bolts, nuts space. Look at your front suspension (upper and lower a arms). Do you have some space on your lower play arm where the bolt slides through? Here is an example.



I know the picture is upside downm,i apologize, just got done with surgery yesterday and it takes a long time to move at all. You see the bolt that has the adjustment for alignment, that is where you may appear to have a 'gap' i believe that is WHERE your sound is coming from.

Well, I came over Engineer pass in Colorado and was heading towards Lake City on the gravel road when we started hearing a faint clanging. Sounded like a chain dangling so checked the spare tire. Nope. Thought it was suspension related but couldn't narrow it down. Kept driving and hearing the clanking -- kind of high pitched-- but never could figure it out.

I decided we needed an expert to look at it. The problem was that it was like 4pm on Friday and Lake City is a very small town. Pulled up to one place and they couldn't look at it but referred me to Rene's place just down the road. I pulled and told Rene's wife that it sounded like clanging beer bottle in a box. She jokingly asked what kind of beer. Haha. Anyway then Rene jacked up the front end so the wheels would spin freely. He rotated them and recreated the sound in the front left wheel all the while joking about rattling beer bottles. He was a hoot. He removed the center cap on my OEM rim and sure enough the little metal cap that's under the plastic center cap had worked itself loose. He checked the right front just to be sure and it was also about ready to come loose as well. He got a flat screwdriver and just pounded them in place and we were off on our way.

Maybe it's the same thing?! Good luck.

I had a weird sharp vibration when I went over bumps, even at slower speeds over speed bumps. I noticed a rock wedged behind one of my KDSS lines, pulled it out and haven't noticed the vibration since. Not sure if it was related, only time will tell.

i know on my 2014 4runner trail i was up in maine for a weeklong camping/fishing trip. while driving around on some loggings roads i noticed a squeak that was annoying the living !@#$ out of me.

did some reading and oddly enough it was the splash guard in the wheel well. there is a plastic plug that holds the panel in place that was rattling and squeaking against each surface, i lubed it up and i noticed the squeak went away. also read about people using rubber gasket material and pushing the plug back in with that as an insulator.

I had a pretty big clunking noise develop on my 15 trail the other day on a relatively mild gravel road. It seems to have resolved itself, but I won't know for sure until my next off road trip. I do however have what sounds like an engine ping coming from the front left wheel well/quarter panel. I thought I got some bad gas, but it has been there for quite a few tanks now. It sounds just like an engine ping, but it only occurs when I'm moving. Truck stopped and all variables of revving the engine doesn't reproduce it, so I'm thinking it's not an engine ping. Also sounds slightly like a playing card in a bicycle wheel/spoke.. It's driving me nuts. Luckily it can be drowned out by the radio.
