2015 TE clank/rattle noise going over bumps

I had this same problem, it sounded like a metal on metal rattle when going over bumps. Attached to the upper control arm is a small C clip that sits in a groove in the suspension. The C clip would rattle up and down whenever I went over a bump. I took a bit of hot glue and put two little dabs under the C clip to hold it in place. That eliminated the rattle!

Just bought a 2015 4R TE and I am loving it :driving:, hopefully this works out for you!

I've got a 15 sr5 and have been having that tin like, metal on metal rattle noise coming from the front end. The only way I can describe the sound is if you took a handful of metal coat hangers and dropped them on concrete. When the truck is parked if I hit the front tires hard on the sidewall I get the issue to replicate itself. If I hit the brakes over bumps the sound is still very noticeable.

I've tried a ton of the suggestions on here, just looking for any and all help!

I heard the same noise the second day driving my 2015 TE home.
The noise was coming from the C-clip under the front upper ball joint. I believe the clip is a safety precaution if the ball joint would to separate due to wear.

I'm not sure how to make the noise go away with removing or damaging the C-clip. Hope this helps anyone with the same issue.

This is my first truck and I love my 15 TE 4 Runner! :heh:

just here because i've got a rattle. backstory:

replaced a flat about a month ago, and ended up replacing all my tires. Discount put my spare back back in its happy spot. This was on a Monday. 3 days later I had an alignment done. Soon after that, I started having the rattle. At the same time, I was moving, so I didn't realize the rattling was coming from my suspension till last week-ish. i hear it from the front end, and can replicate it pretty easily by rolling over speed bumps when crawling at the mall. front wheels go over - rattle. rear wheels go over - nothing. in my head that eliminates spare tire chain. i'll check into the UBJ c-clip and a few other suggestions mentioned here.

I also have an intermittent pop/clunk when turning that sounds like something binding and then releasing. It's only audible, no physical feedback through the wheel or floor. It's intermittent so I've not been successful getting the dealer to figure out what it is, but my 3yr/36k warranty runs out this month. :wacko:

I had that happen after my lift when I would back into a parking spot and couldn't figure out wtf it was. I mentioned it during an alignment and the guy took a compressed air wrench (or whatever they're called) and went all over the frame until he found a loose bolt and I haven't heard it since.

My rattling ended up being a loose camber bolt. Back to the alignment shop tomorrow.

I can't create my own posts yet, but here we go...

I have a 2019 4Runner TRDOR, I LOVE it so far. It only has 450 miles (I don't have to drive far) and when I hit ruts in the road like between two sections of asphalt and the tires/truck gets jarred hard it makes a CLANK noise. I've already eliminated the skid plates (removed them and tried it) and the mud guard in the wheel well (removed it too to test) and it is still doing it. It sounds like a metal on metal or two beer bottles clanking together when it jolts.

I'm a bit sad that a very expensive off road truck with less than 1k miles already has a clunk.

Any tips for me? Any help at all would be great. I don't mind taking to dealer, but I doubt they'll be able to help me much.

I had same issue for the longest time and I discovered my sway bar was sometimes hitting the lower radiator support bars.

I removed those braces when I installed aftermarket skid plates and no longer have the issue. Ignore the yellow arrow on picture, I stole this pic from another thread

That is a bad idea. Those braces are structural supports for the front suspension. ARB makes a kit that has a new driver side support with more clearance so your swaybar won't rub. Look at my build thread for more info

I have looked at how structural it is and I dont see them being that important. You have to remove them for aftermarket skid plates. They are hollow tube and the skid plates are as strong or stronger than those hollow tubes. And I don't believe they are for suspension support, they are simply a radiator support. But the skids will do the same job

Thanks for the recommendation! I removed it, and it was still there. I'll try to get a video. The best way to describe it, is it sounds almost like iron / a ball joint but it's not a rattle it's more of a one time rattle/clank instead of like a bad sway bar link etc... It's definitely metal against metal. It's not high pitched, it sounds almost like banging a cast iron pan with a lead pipe. It only happens on breaks in the pavement or sharp hits not on uneven surfaces/going up and down off my driveway curb.

As for the Clip on the upper arm, I was able to tie a piece of rubber seal I used for screen doors around it, and it didn't change. It's also super firmly seated.

I got down with a rubber mallet and banged on the wheel, hub, all suspension parts, skid plates, and even the CV axles and caliper. This sound isn't like something is rattling loose, it sounds like two heavy pieces are clashing into each other. Almost like a metal mixing bowl that weighs a ton is being dropped into another one.
