2015 Trail cranks but will not start

Just got back from having it towed to the dealer. It is still under warranty, but with the lift and bumper we'll have to see. They have a way of figuring out how to blame mods for issues...

I will try to locate the fpr in my 2016 when I get home tonight. the dealer should not blame it on the lift and bumper cause they would have to show relevance, so hopefully you will be good. I am definately interested in the diagnosis.
 
So far, dealership says its a spark issue not a fuel issue as I had suspected. I called to check on it and they asked me if I needed to be given a jump recently or anything unusual going on when I drove it last...I guess they're scratching their heads too!

Replying to another post...yes the little furry things love to get on top of the manifolds and eat wires....

They didn't tell me what they were getting from the computer...the service adviser said that fuel wasn't the issue, and that there was no spark and then asked me what it was doing before it died.

Honestly, I'm just happy it didn't start when it rolled off the tow truck! I've heard a few stories where it seemed like the truck just wanted to be carried somewhere haha!

I looked and looked for any evidence of rodents...only found a bird nest...

They will ultimately find the issue.
Glad it is under warranty.

I am glad the truck is exhibiting the issue at the dealer. Cause often the dealer cannot reproduce the issue.
So after looking at the fuse box in the engine bay and inside the cabin i could not find the cor or fpr relay and was told by a 2015 trd tacoma owner and friend that the cor relay is inside the kicker panel. it's 20 degrees out here so I didnt verify yet.

I appreciate you checking for me. Hopefully I'll know what happened sometime tomorrow. I'll update when I have more info.
 
Hi !!
If you have a "cranking no start" all you need is spark, fuel, and air. If you know how to check for spark I'd do that first. If you do have spark you can give the engine a good toot of Brake Kleen into the intake or a vacuum line...see if it tries to start...if it does you have a fuel delivery issue...fuel pump, fuel pump circuit, or maybe no injector pulse

Wouldn't it be easier to test for fuel issue by shooting some quick start (ether) into the intake?

To check for spark, do you pull a spark plug solenoid and plug to check it?
 
going out on a limb, but have you tried to start it with the other (second) key? I had an issue with my "chip" in one of the keys and it would crank but not actually start. When I used the other key it worked fine. Something about if the chip is not being read correctly it doesn't let the fuel pump run or something like that.

I actually tried all 3 keys at varying times and after pulling the negative off the battery to let it reset. As mentioned in an earlier post, it's at the dealer now. I'm waiting for what I hope is good news.

To reply to an earlier post, I agree you need air, spark, and fuel for an engine to run. Since the truck is under warranty, I didn't want to start taking too many things loose to spray anything into anything...let the dealership do that. I wanted to check anything that could be relatively easily checked(fuses, relays, loose plugs, chewed wires) and fix that if possible. Going in to the dealer for service is always a pain, and I am relatively handy since I have several non-warranty Toyota trucks I maintain on my own....once it got past the "easy" stuff I figured I'd just let them have it.
 
The dealer just called to say it's the crank shaft position sensor that has gone bad. Totally covered by the warranty, and that I should have the truck back tomorrow. Says it's very uncommon. Thank goodness for that extended warranty! 56000 miles... something like that really should last longer.

Glad it is sorted out. Seems there should be a code for that, but :shrug:
 
I guess the sensor is not part of the powertrain coverage?

Out of all my reading over the years on the 4runner, never heard of it going bad.

Brings me back to memories of my 7.3 CPS failure days, lol.
