2015 Trail cranks but will not start

I had rats chew through 2 injector leads with no CEL...

I had an EGR wire (IIRC) chewed, it threw a code on my ultragauge. Same code on dealerships Techstream. With technology today, one would think there would be code to everything that doesn't talk back to the ECU.

The dealer just called to say it's the crank shaft position sensor that has gone bad. Totally covered by the warranty, and that I should have the truck back tomorrow. Says it's very uncommon. Thank goodness for that extended warranty! 56000 miles... something like that really should last longer.

Glad it all worked out for you. Sensors are electronic so going bad prematurely is a possibility. Good thing you had the extended warranty cause it covered labor and parts, saving you some money.

glad they were able to get it figured out. As other have mentioned you would think there would be a code for that though.

i was about to say, if it was the CPS, that's awfully premature!
if it's no spark, i wonder if it's a bad engine ground? it'd be highly unlikely the ECM took a dump, and i cant think of anything else the ECM would use to control spark, aside from Crank and Cam sensors (if our motors have em).

Im genuinely stumped and hope the dealer gets it resolved for you soon!

Well guys and gal(in case there is one), the dealer called to tell me the sensor didn't fix the issue.

I was very shocked that the CPS was bad at this age. so they still have no idea whats going on ?

my guess is the PCM,,, yes this can happen new or very old ..
when they get it fixed you may need a new battery ..

That should have thrown a code.

Hi !!
Sorry the "Stealership" hasn't been able to fix it. I'm usually on the C5 Corvette Forums where we have a $hitload of electrical issues being that the car is fiberglass and ground circuits are critical and also it's a 20 year old car....my 2016 4 Runner has no problems yet and that's why I bought one....funny they replaced the CRK sensor on yours and it didn't fix it. They probably didn't even check the sensor wiring. I just helped one of our C5 guys a few days ago that had a "cranking no start"...I had him check for Tach movement during cranking...Tach didn't move...no spark or injector pulse...this is pretty good indication of a bad CRK sensor. I instructed him how to check the wiring and we had low voltage (3 volts instead of 12) going to the sensor...Checked PCM power and grounds and they were good...well it's a bad PCM !!...if Tach DID move the next thing is to check for spark...if spark good a toot of Brake Kleen will tell you if it's a fuel delivery issue...bad fuel pump or no "injector pulse"...this is a fairly EASY diagnosis but I guess tough for the Dealership...LOL !!...let us know what happens and all the parts they replaced !!....GOOD LUCK !!

Update to say there is no update...I did get a 2018 SR5 as a loaner though. That's nice.

Wait... Still there with no solution yet?

I hope they gave that loaner on the 1st day when it had to stay overnight...... at least that's what my dealership does!

Nothing at all today, no contact from them. As far as the loaner, I waited 3 days and then asked for a loaner. Never had this kind of thing happen, so I didnt realize I should have one.

Maybe all of the Toyota Dealerships don't participate in that complimentary perk.
I never had to ask when mine had to stay overnight for whatever reason...just recently, they didn't have a replacement tire (1/2" Bolt made a nice large hole in one tire) in stock and would be the following day for them to get a replacement, they had a 4Runner waiting for me to take home.
Never had to ask...

I hope they fix your issue soon!

any updates OP?

I hope this update makes it...the forum being down has been a little bit of a pain!

So Toyota USA told the dealer to replace the ECM. Apparently that part takes a couple of days to make it here, so maybe today it'll be replaced and we'll see. I offered them the ECM out of the loaner they gave me, but they said no...oh well.

thanks for the update. im sure a bunch of us are curious as to what the cause is. hope it works out!

I got it back from the dealership last night. They said they replaced the ECM and I drove it home. I asked for any further explanation, but none was offered. I asked if there's any chance I'll ever find out what caused the ECM to fail, and was told no, not very likely.

So, that's it. It's running and driving, but no idea what caused the issue. My radio presets are still there, but my average fuel economy was reset to 0. Honestly, it wasn't much better than 0 to begin with haha!
