2016 Limited Screeching Noise - Video (Not Brakes or Belts)

I've got it too. I'm so glad you all have it. Sorry but i thought I was the only person on the planet with this issue. I have a 2016 limited with 40K. I've noticed the following...

Seems to act up in the Spring and after heavy rains.

I pumped all the zerks full of grease and that didn't seem to affect it.

If I saw on the wheel at speed (30-40 mph) the sound comes and goes.

It's not related to the brakes or transmission since it does it when coasting in N or brakes are applied or not.

The common thread I'm seeing is...LTD. Have something to do specifically with the AWD or XREASS?

I've made an appointment last year but then it wouldn't do it.

Also, because it seems to be on the LTDs maybe those drivers aren't as particular or knowledgeable about vehicles and aren't noticing it?

Hey guys. So, I have the same noise that is recorded in the attached video of the op. I suspected that it was brakes. we also had a severe brake pulsation, so I replaced them with EBC Green Stuff pads and matching rotors. the noise went away for a week, but came back. I have chassis ears and decided to use them to isolate and locate the noise. It ended up sounding like it was coming from the differential. I took it to my local dealership and they isolated it at the right rear brake. they said that when they used a small pry bar, they could pull the pads away from the rotor and the noise would go away. they said that they could not cover it under warranty because the pads and rotors were aftermarket. I told them that it existed prior to the brake replacement, but they still refused the repair. I suspect that it is the caliper hanging up just enough to keep that pad in contact that when the vehicle heats up from driving for long periods of time the components expand just enough to start the squeal. I'm going to have a friend (at the dealership that I bought it from) replace that caliper and retest on Monday. I will update this reply after it has been replaced and I have driven the vehicle for a week or so... I hope this helps those of you who are also experiencing this same problem!

Thanks and please let us know. I've pulled all the brakes on mine and found nothing. In addtion mine would continue the noise when the brakes were lightly applied.

Noise solved (so far, I think)!

Hey guys. here are the details. I replaced the EBC pads with factory pads and shims. The noise started again within 12 miles. I took it back to the dealer and they verified the noise again and then said that it was the right side axle bearing. When they were re-installing the axle, they noticed that the inside of the housing looked like glitter. they drained the fluid and it came out like liquid metal (dark silver/gray), so they ended up replacing the third member under warranty. It's been two days, and no squeak yet. keep your fingers crossed!

How does the Limited differ from the other 4x4 models in offroad hardware. Isn't the system slightly different?

I'd start there, as it only seems like Limiteds with the problem.

Took it to dealer and within 40 minutes of hearing the sound I was given a rental. They told me it’s the transfer case and they will have Toyota Corporate have a tech consultanting on this repair.

The sound still has not came back yet. I am well out of warranty now...but it is on file with Toyota...LOL for whatever that is worth LOL

Guys, the reason the OP never came back to report a resolution on this is probably that he was too embarrassed to admit that it was a brake noise after all.

Sand or grit can become embedded in the pads and rub against the rotor, and in certain circumstances or at certain speeds, it can cause this kind of high-pitched shrieking noise. Usually a hard stop or two from high speed will rub it down or dislodge it.

It's often hard to tell where a noise is coming from when you're inside the vehicle.

Nothing in the driveline would make this kind of intermittent, speed-dependent shrieking noise

No it was not from the brakes...LOL

So after 3 days in a rental, I’m fixed. They replaced front and rear seals in my transfer case and everything seems fine.

I have the same issue with my 2018 Limited with 45K miles. I asked dealership about it recently but they just said they couldn’t re-create it so nothing they can do right now. Looks like two possible solutions, axle bearing/fluid and/or front and rear seals in the transfer case. For those who have had either of these done, does it still seem to have fixed the issue or have you had the screeching again?
