2016 - Trabucco Creek Road & Maple Springs Road ?'s

Finally got new tires, Pirelli Scorpions MTR's in 285/70/17 for my glorified station wagon. My son and I wanted to drive to Saddleback peak via Maple Springs Road but gate was locked. Anybody know when they open that up?

Instead we drove the creek bed off Trabucco Creek Road to the Holy Jim parking area , roads were a little muddy was a fun couple hours. Saw a bunch of Toyota's & Jeeps farting around too. Stayed in the creek bed for the most part. Anybody know any cool side trails to hit for our next drive?

They also said that in 2015. Someone on Tw said the road is badly erroded. I'd be surprised if it ever gets opened.

All three access points to Saddleback are currently closed. This is link shows the current status of every major road and trail in Cleveland National Forest.

I'm sure they'll re-open it eventually but it wouldn't surprise me if they keep things closed another year or two. They delayed the re-opening this year due to the threat of El Nino flooding and erosion of all the hillsides that were burned two summers ago. Luckily El Nino has been a bust thus far but I suspect USFS will be cagey about it until some brush has had a chance to regrow.

I actually haven't run it yet, but it starts near 33.637523, -117.422422 which is Ortega and North Main Divide/Long Canyon Road, then there's a gate near Blue Jay campground that is either open or not depending on weather. The gate on up is North Main Divide to Santiago Peak. I'll get up there one of these days to go check it out.

I took the Ortega entrance up to the peak, then down Bedford Rd into Corona a few weeks ago. Indian Truck trail was open at that time as well.

Up at the peak, I overheard some guys talking about the closure of Maple Springs, and about the possible re-opening later this year. We'll see if it pans out this time. Another guy up there said that he jogs up the Maple Springs side from time to time, and he mentioned that the road is washed away in many locations.

Bedford and Indian closed last week due to the rain but, per the link above, they both look to be open again. That's standard operating procedure during rain.
