The build continues...

Luke’s work over at 4x4 Labs got me going. Initially I wanted to get after a full set-up from his shop... But I hadn’t properly considered the load on the stock TRD suspension. I figured I might get away with Toytec’s 2" TRDP lift kit, but I changed my mind after further consideration. I'll only started with Luke’s Sliders and Rear Bumper and addressed the suspension before I tackled any more.

Was back and forth on wheels/tires/size for weeks. I know the steelies were going to happen... Though I didn't think I wanted 33s. Also didn’t want to lift the truck all that much. Simply want to compensate for added build weight. Wrong tires showed up @ 255/80, and I loved them. Paired with the Icon set up, seemed like a great fit to me. Dropped the Slimline Hybrid up front + Warn's VR10000 and I was done... For a bit.

Over the summer I tackled a few parts I could handle on my own. The Airtop RTT has proven to be my favorite part of the build to date... Not sure I'll be inclined to sleep on the ground ever again.

Mostly toying with parts and pieces as the bulk of the build is done. Looking to post a grip of pictures as soon as I get time.

First wave:

Thanks to all you for this forum. Great place to do research. Like your feedback if you think I'm missing anything. I'll also keep this post current as I finish work. Possibly my build might help someone down the road. Even if it all has been done before.

powder coat?

Truck goes in soon. Was thinking I might consider color matching the FJ steelies to the old grey steel from early Land Cruiser days... Thoughts?

I'd try to keep the TRD Pro Wheels if it's possible with the new tires. They're the best looking wheels out there for these 4runners.

I have a feeling you won't have much trouble unloading any of those TRD pro parts. Just a hunch.

Personally I think the steelies are a bit too classic on such a modern looking vehicle. BUT I also think the TRDBro wheels are meh... Go for the steelies and be different!
 
Go for the gray powder coated steelies if not for anything other than being unique

Luke was great. I'm looking forward to his shipment. As far as the TRD wheels... No really my style. And there are more than a handful of TRDPs at work. Nice to switch it up and make it my own.
 
I can understand not liking the TRDP wheels as a matter of opinion, but replacing them with steelies? It reminds me of when I see people in the winter with a newer BMW with steelies for their snow tires. I understand the functionality, but no part of me thinks that looks good, especially on a brand new $40k+ vehicle. Personally it reminds me of the bottom of the barrel, bone stock 2wd Tacoma.
 
Update 1: First wave of mods happening this week.

Tire shop turned out to be a total comedy of errors... FJ Steelies didn't fit due to powder coat. Easy fix with a little bit of sandpaper and TLC. Unfortunately the tire shop couldn't help for whatever reason. Had to take them home and do it myself. Went back and got them installed today... Though something looked odd once they were done... We all started talking about it and we realized the tires were the wrong size (somebody ****ed up)? Found out there was another customer who also special ordered a set of 5 Discoverer S/T MAXXs... But 255/80s. I had ordered the 275/70s. So. Well ****. The work was done and they had put the 255/80s on my rig. And I kind of wasn't mad about it (I had initially looked into the 255/80s and went back and forth before I ordered the 275/70s). So we worked out a deal, and I left with the 255/80s (and a solid cash credit back in my pocket)! Totally not mad about any of this. Pizza cutters looked better than I might have thought. Also surprised I didn't seem to have any rub with the factory TRD suspension?

Funny note. The 255/80s were for another 2016 4runner... I wouldn't be surprised if this guy is here. [Advanced apology for running off with your tires, whoever you are. They did say they would get you new ones though!]

Monday the lift goes on. As well as my sliders and bumpers. Looking forward to this...

Appreciate the feedback! Though I think it all looks great now that they are on. So my style. Happy about the decision. Fits me. :reddance:
