Judging by options, yes, I think the TRD Pro is "lesser" than the new TRD Off Road/Premium. However, in terms of model hierarchy, I assume the TRD Pro will sit at the top of the pecking order, mostly because of its exclusivity.

Just as it is now with TRD Pro, Limited, Trail Premium, Trail, SR5 Premium and SR5 in that order.

Nope, just cosmetics, no suspension improvements from the press release, so the TRD Pro will still be the top model.

From the pics in a Motortrend article I just read, you'd think they'd stop putting street tires on a vehicle labeled as "TRD OFF ROAD". :doh:

Toyota has interns writing their press releases again. States that the 4runner debut was in 1985 when in fact it was 1984. Come on.

Assuming that means it has the suspension from the TRD Pro, plus KDSS, and the premium features, I can't see how it wouldn't both have a higher msrp and fit in between the TRD Pro and Limited pricing wise. The TRD Pro should already have KDSS IMO. Actually only the TRD Pro and Limited should have KDSS to differentiate them.

The TRD name replaces the word the "trail" in the trail and premium which will not ! have the aftermarket suspension.
The TRD pro will not be available with KDSS and will have the small lift kit with suspension.

KDSS is not compatible with their TRD suspension that increases wheel travel. the lineup will be exactly as it is now except with the word TRD replacing the word trail.

I kept looking at the wheels and thinking, "Those are just normal Trail wheels.", but then I noticed the inside of the wheels are painted black. They should have just made the whole wheel black, since that's what so many people like.

it says that, but i don't think it will, why take a lower trim and make it better then the next higher trim, that's not good marketing.

They just want to throw a few cosmetic things in to justify the $39K MSRP, since most of the the real value is in features you cant see from the outside.

Plus I don't trust toyota press releases, if they were right then the TRD pro would have a sunroof :naughty:

The writing was on the wall for this and all their other trucks (Tundra is all that's left). Toyota realized with the Tacoma that a good number were TRD...i.e. It commands a premium (profit). So the focus shifted to TRD trims with the new Tacoma....basically making and pushing more of them and charging more. Now the same is happening to the 4Runner. The "trail" model will not command a premium the way a TRD model will. And so they'll have TRD versions at a higher price.

For reference find the marketing videos and articles for the Tacoma when it was coming out. They openly discuss the TRD aspect.

I kind of like the headrests. The wheels look kind of cool too, but that's what mine look like now due to brake dust.

The C-pillar badging is atrocious though.

judging by the stance in the motortrend article the suspension components will be the same as the current trails with KDSS optional, as well as the bumper valences, grill/fascia, which is what keeps it in between the SR5 and LTD price range. but some 2-tone trail wheels, stitching in the headrest, ugly c-pillar badge, and logo'd floor mats (that every replaces with WT/Husky) are the changes that are going to cost new buyers more $.... how stupid.

I think this sentiment is a little premature, at least until we get pricing information. Toyota simply can't change the name on a trim and jack the price up - people aren't that stupid, and these models still have a specific value proposition between SR5 and Limited.

TRD is a marketing ploy, plain and simple. In some applications, it's more meaningful than others, but it's quite simply a marketing campaign in action. I think that Toyota is trying to raise the profile of TRD in general, which I personally see as a good thing, but I really don't care what they call it as long as we get a solid product.

This move also helps to simplify some of Toyota's truck trim levels.

SR5 = base for Tacoma, Tundra, 4Runner. I know Tacoma has lower SR trim.

SR5 Premium = maybe not as applicable for Taco/Tundra, as Tacoma allows for the ordering of more standalone options on each grade.

I assume that it will be the same for Tundra redesign. Dropping "Trail" simplifies it. Nice and tidy.
