Why not make the TRD or the Trail with an optional 3rd row? Although a small market, I think it should still be an option.
I guess all in it will be cheaper for me to get a loaded premium SR5 with 3rd row and put my own suspension on it.

I think this sentiment is a little premature, at least until we get pricing information. Toyota simply can't change the name on a trim and jack the price up - people aren't that stupid, and these models still have a specific value proposition between SR5 and Limited.

TRD is a marketing ploy, plain and simple. In some applications, it's more meaningful than others, but it's quite simply a marketing campaign in action. I think that Toyota is trying to raise the profile of TRD in general, which I personally see as a good thing, but I really don't care what they call it as long as we get a solid product.

This move also helps to simplify some of Toyota's truck trim levels.

SR5 = base for Tacoma, Tundra, 4Runner. I know Tacoma has lower SR trim.

SR5 Premium = maybe not as applicable for Taco/Tundra, as Tacoma allows for the ordering of more standalone options on each grade.

TRD Off Road Premium

Limited

TRD Pro

I assume that it will be the same for Tundra redesign. Dropping "Trail" simplifies it. Nice and tidy.

Remember you're posting on a forum of enthusiasts. The other 99.5% will fall exactly into the marketing trap you mentioned. The one benefit is increased sales and profit for Toyota will hopefully keep the 4runner around!

No suspension change yet....yet...LOL! Check into the Bilstein 6112/5160 threads (essentially the TRD Pro Suspension with slightly different valving and spring rate as well as more adjustability)

Regardless of the naming schemes, I am hopeful these "changes" for 2017 signify the end of the line for the 5th Gen with a new 6th gen (crossing fingers) on the horizon.

It seems like Toyota as well as other makers like to offer these end of model cycle tweaks, trim changes, etc prior to launching a new model in hopes to grab a few extra sales off an old model.

One can dream right

Don't they know the majority of people just debadge the vehicle, replace the wheels, and upgrade the floormats anyway who use them offroad... I think it's pretty comical those are the areas they decided to address and market to make the model "different" rather than put on some actual all terrain tires that are worth a damn. Toyota has the most clever marketing and profitable sales departments of all time. Love it

But again we are the .5% of sales...the other 99.5% don't debadge, change wheels or heck, most will just get the same stock bridgestones/dunlops that came stock because that's what the dealer recommends. You are correct, their sales department knows how to make $.

Not entirely true. Going off the description AND the pictures the wheels (TRDOF = Trail) are slightly changing in that they are painted black on the inside if you look closely like someone already mentioned.

I am going to disagree with the wheels being different. I just walked outside to compare mine to the pictures. They are the same. While it would be rad to have special wheels for the TRAIL aka TRD Off Road, I do not think that is going to happen. Here is to wishful thinking!:wof:

Agreed. The Limited was first offered in the final year of the 2nd gen, the Sport was first offered in the last two years of 3rd gen, and the Trail was first offered in the last year of the 4th gen. On the other hand, the Urban Runner just died out.

I think the general consensus is that they painted the inside of the wheel, not the spokes.

It's the same wheel as yours, and mine, but the center caps, and the "barrel" of the wheel is painted black.
