2017 TRD Off Road vs TRD Pro

You don't?

Shit, $40,000 x 7% = $2,800.

If you don't have sales tax on vehicles in Oregon I know where I'll be buying my next one!

The only issue is if you then register your vehicle in a state within the next year that has a higher tax rate you have to pay the difference then. If the states didn't do that then everyone would buy there vehicles in Delaware and Oregon.

Example: I was living in California, purchased in Maryland and saved ~ $1,200 in taxes (as I knew I was moving back East anyway). I tried to buy in California so I could use it to move cross country but the dealers couldn't compete with the OTD price. I registered to the house I own in Maryland to pay thier taxes. When I moved to Florida less then a month after purchase I didn't have to pay additional taxes on it because Maryland and Florida have the same sales tax rate. If Florida was higher I would have had to pay the difference.

Disregard the price and go for what you want. I have a sneaking suspicion if you get the off road, you will always second guess yourself.

Go big!

I just picked up my TRDP tonight. Have a 14TEP prior with 5100's, Michelins, Spidertrax spacers and Poly bushings on all swaybar contact points. It was 25 miles on Interstate to home and "WOW". Huge difference in ride over the 14TEP. Flatter and took road bumps much better and steering felt much faster. Overall a great first ride home

No first hand experience to this comparison but totally agree TRDP compared to my 3rd gen. This has been commented on by others that the TRDP is softer suspension along with longer travel which is in my opinion why it is recommended for fast off road travel...eh YMMV.
cheers,
Willie

So I have got the option to either wait for a May/June delivery on a cement TRD Pro or I could drive a white TRD Off Road (regular not premium) off the lot tomorrow. OTD prices are:

Pro: 42,500
Off Road: 38,500

Off road does not come with KDSS.

What would yall do? I can see advantages and disadvantages to both, but I am curious to know what yall would do if you had this situation.

The Pro and the Off Road should have the same trim.
Neither will have KDSS.
Pro will have TRD/Bilstein shocks, front with softer spring rate. Rear will have remote reservoir. Front and rear will be valved differently than stock tonaka shocks on all other 4runners.

Off Road will have Tonaka shocks.

I don't know if the Off Road will have crawl control and other bells / whistles as the Pro. You will have to check of someone can chime in.

Wheels and shocks on the Off Road could be replaced for a lot less than the 4000 you are paying up front.
6112/5160 Bilsteins would set you back about 1000-1100.
You could work out a deal with the dealer on the tires/rims more than likely.
If not, sell them...

Just throwing that info out there.

The cement is a great color, BTW!

I think the question is whether you want Cement and whether it's worth $4 -5k. TRD Pro is an appearance package primarily. There are better options for suspension. The suspension is 100% identical except for the shocks and springs as the base model TRD OR/Trail. A full set of Fox, King, or similar shocks plus rear springs will set you back around $2500 and be a significant step up in suspension, or you can just buy all the TRD Pro suspension bits for around $1000. Use the other $1500 for a winch mount and bumper.

For me - it's an each choice, Trail Premium with KDSS, Fox suspension, rock sliders and a winch. Better on road. Better off road. Better interior. Same price... BUT - if you love Cement - there's only one option. Inferno is the only TRD Pro color I lust for.

I'm sure you see that $38.5k is on the high side for a TRD OR base model. $37k is a good price. If you can't work out a better deal, use Costco or Cargurus. Looks like Arkansas?? If so here's a '16 Trail Base for $37k - https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/new/s...6379&distance=200&zip=71611#listing=161092152

I had to make a similar decision when I got my 2016 TE with KDDS. I chose this over TRD pro because I wanted to make my own mods (e.g., skid plates, lift etc.) The TRD is sexy, but why not build your own?

If you don't have in Oregon I know where I'll be buying my next one!

Texas sales tax on vehicles is 6.25%. Most people don't have good trade value either or have good enough credit to get a low interest rate to reduce the tax. It hurts financing that much.

THIS!!!

It is doubtful if you buy the TRD Pro in the color you want, you will find yourself saying, I should have gone with the TRD Offroad in white. But it is likely you will have a regret in the back of your mind going the other way. The fact that you are asking, already means you are having doubts.

That said, I personally would go with the cheaper version and customize and personalize along the way as my budget allows. Any 4Runner you buy, in its stock configuration, is likely able to keep up with 95% of the offroading the average member here will ever need. Also, if you keep reading this forum and checking out the group buys, you will be like many of us here and catch the modification/add-on bug real quick!

Do you think they'll let you register it without paying sales tax when you get home? I can assure you every state has figured this out a long time ago. But there is a way to solve the problem.

The answer is to buy in Montana - setup an LLC for $50 with a PO box, register the vehicle to the LLC in Montana and then put Montana plates on it. BUT... you'll have to pay cash or do a special loan because the normal lenders won't do a transaction like that. On the plus side - Montana has no emissions or inspections ever, so you don't ever have to go back there to do anything. Just pay annual taxes for new plate stickers until the vehicle is 10 years old. Then you get a permanent sticker that's good for as long as you own it.

That's why just about every rental car in California, and many large expensive RVs and airplanes roll with Montana plates. There are boutique law firms that do this and receive your mail as a registered agent for $50/yr. On a million dollar RV or Ferrari you're comparing around $500 vs $60-80k. It's a no brainer. On a 4runner it's questionable whether it's worth the effort unless you already have contacts there.

I register most of my vehicles that way. We bought our RX350 and my 4runner the same day and I couldn't afford to pay cash for both, so my 4runner ended up with a Utah plate - for $3k :(. Otherwise my FJ40, RX350, and motorcycle are all done that way. Saves a bunch of $ on taxes and PITA doing emissions and inspection tests.

:thumb3:

My vote is TRD Off Road, but I'm biased :)

KDSS has always been optional on the Trail Edition/TRD Off Road models. Never has been standard.

Oh ok I was under the impression that you had the Trail edition without KDSS and the Trail Premium with KDSS. So he said OFF ROAD Premium and noticed he didn't have KDSS, I figured they weren't offering it anymore.

One more thing, I have KDSS on my little mall crawler, and I keep hearing this squeaking noise coming from the front area. It must be the KDSS, what do you think I read it on the forum, I think it must be that. Any input 1engineer?

Just kidding, my vehicle is all good. I just read through that thread and enjoyed your response to everything that blamed it on KDSS. My noise is coming from that shield on the wheel well. :clap2:

Hopefully people can learn something from that thread...

I am going through this now too. I have decided to go '17 TRD Off Road Prem with KDSS. Pro suspension would get swapped out eventually so not worth the extra cost up front. Pro is the one for status but an Off Road will do the trick just fine for most users including me.

If it wasn't for the Cement color it would be a no brainer. Trail and then mod to your liking. I currently have a 16 trail premium in magnetic grey. That cement though!!!

I like the TRD but the TEP's heated seats, roof and KDSS worked for me.

Added the TRD suspension, grill, Weathertech mats, and clear protection. Modifying/customizing the Truck Vault I have and deciding on which sliders to buy.

Toyota makes it easy to find a truck that suits your needs and budget.
