2017 TRD Off Road vs TRD Pro

If you plan to add bumpers, winches and install a stiffer suspension, go with the Off Road.
If you plan to keep the vehicle mostly stock and don't mind waiting till May, go for the pro. The Pro will have a higher re-sale value, either short or long term.
Also, the Cement color is pretty cool and unique.

Why do you say go with the Off Road over the Pro if you want bumpers? I do want to add a front bumper:

2010-2016 4Runner Front Bumper, 5th Generation

and rear bumper:

4Runner Rear Bumper & Tire Rack, 5th Gen (2010-2016)

Is there something that the TRD PRO can't handle with the new bumpers that the Off Road handles better?

Thanks,
RR

I think the question is whether you want Cement and whether it's worth $4 -5k. TRD Pro is an appearance package primarily. There are better options for suspension. The suspension is 100% identical except for the shocks and springs as the base model TRD OR/Trail. A full set of Fox, King, or similar shocks plus rear springs will set you back around $2500 and be a significant step up in suspension, or you can just buy all the TRD Pro suspension bits for around $1000. Use the other $1500 for a winch mount and bumper.

For me - it's an each choice, Trail Premium with KDSS, Fox suspension, rock sliders and a winch. Better on road. Better off road. Better interior. Same price... BUT - if you love Cement - there's only one option. Inferno is the only TRD Pro color I lust for.

I'm sure you see that $38.5k is on the high side for a TRD OR base model. $37k is a good price. If you can't work out a better deal, use Costco or Cargurus. Looks like Arkansas?? If so here's a '16 Trail Base for $37k - https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/new/s...6379&distance=200&zip=71611#listing=161092152

Why do you say interior is better on Trail Premium (as compared to what? TRD Off Road Premium or TRD PRO)?

Thanks,
RR

So the TRD Off Road is a new name for Trail Edition. It's getting hard to keep up with all the acronyms and such. But let's call it a TRD-OR vs Pro. The TRD-OR can be bought in base or premium versions and with or without KDSS. Depending on market area KDSS is anywhere from nearly 100% of TRD-OR models to none.

The "premium" model of the TRD-OR is the same upgrade as the SR5 Premium. It adds heated windshield and mirrors, softex (fake leather) interior with heated seats, used to add sunroof by default, not required now, mirror puddle lights and turn signals in mirrors, Entune premium, homelink, auto dimming rear view mirror, and a few other things.

The TRD Pro now has softex standard to match the interior of the TRD-OR Premium but otherwise is the same as a TRD-OR base model. The TRD Pro package then adds the appearance package of black grill accents. It has an aluminum front skid plate where the TRD-OR has a steel one. And it also has Bilstien shocks that are very similar to the 6112/5120 combo. The PRO has the black wheels and different OEM tires - same size, but Nittos.

Compared to the Premium models it's missing a few things like homelink, premium entune, upgraded mirrors, auto dimming mirror, sunroof, and a few other bits. It's closer to a base model, but they're all reasonably similar with some small changes.

The TRD-OR has the option of KDSS. That's the big differentiation between them. If you're not familiar with KDSS it's a hydraulically linked front and rear antisway bar set. It's a feature exclusive to the Land Cruiser, GX460, and 4runner TRD-OR (and a few upper end Mclaren supercars also license the same system). You cannot get KDSS on a PRO. As between the two IMO KDSS is about a thousand times more desirable to me than the PRO appearance package and bilstien shocks. The original TRD PRO concepts had KDSS but it was deleted - my guess is that it was left off to keep the price point under the limited price.

For me personally I upgraded to fox suspension, so I would have tossed the bilstein shocks that the PRO comes with anyway. Fox suspension plus KDSS makes for a fantastic balance of street and offroad use. And it's adjustable height so I can compensate for my winch, and/or adjust for any height between 0 lift and 3 inches of lift with about 30 minutes of turning wrenches anytime I want.

Without the associated marketing of special colors and appearance trim parts, the TRD PRO is a lesser model than a TRD-OR Premium with KDSS. If you didn't know about the advertising you'd slot the TRD Pro below the OR Premium in the lineup. The interior/exterior premium additions are better, and KDSS is way better than a set of mid-range shocks. What's great is that you don't have to pay a big hype premium to get the best version of the 4runner.

In a perfect world we'd have an option for a Limited with KDSS and the off road features. Alas you'll have to pony up a minimum of around $65k to get a GX460 with crawl control and then another $2k or so to add a rear locker. That's as close as it gets from the factory for getting the best of everything.

Got it...

It really sucks as I want the Cement color, but not worth it if I'm getting a lesser vehicle.

So here's a funny thing... The 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium offers the following Packages:

1) $100- includes mooroof
2) $1350- includes KDSS and sliding cargo deck
3) $1850- includes KDSS and moonroof
4) $2200- includes moonroof, KDSS and sliding cargo deck

Who the hell is pricing these things?

If KDSS + Cargo = $1350... and moon roof is $100... how in the hell is the combo of all $2200? Should be $1450... where is the $750 markup coming from!!!?

LOL

And.. on top of that... I can't even choose option 4 with the Magnetic Grey Metallic color... only the Barcelona Red... (why the hell is that)? I can only choose the $1850 KDSS w/ moonroof...

I really want the sliding cargo deck, but it looks like that is a no go, are there any ways to get it + moonroof and KDSS? Or am I limited to aftermarket?

So assuming I went with the 2017 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium with the KDSS/Moonroof package (and no additional accessories) I'm looking at $42,105 (+ taxes i think).

It looks like I Can get TRD 17" Alloy Wheel for around $196 per online, and I Can do shocks aftermarket as well.

My biggest hesitation to pull the trigger is that hte 2017 4Runner do not have ANY of the convenient safety features almost all other Toyota have nowadays...

Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) Features for Toyota Owners

I've read that the 2018 model will include these standard...

My question is would you buy a vehicle without these features? Should i wait? I know nothing beats situational awareness... but the lane assist and blind spot monitoring seems very helpful...

Sorry for the long post I apprecaite your insight!!

Couple of things...

The TRD Pro has always had Softex seats. It also has homelink, premium entune and an auto dimming mirror...oh yeah, and automatic headlights. But I digress...

Judging by your whole tone it's fairly obvious which trim level you own - it's a good thing you didn't go with the 'lesser' model!

You may check with a local dealer if you have a reliable one. Mine was about to locate exactly what I wanted. They will have to bring it in but they found what I couldn't.

So it appears the TRD PRO has all those features the TRD OFF Road Premium has except..

- No Sunroof
- No KDSS

I'm not familiar with KDSS outside of what I've read... it would seem this would be a feature you'd want, right?

I guess I really would like to get some input about the safety features that are rumored for the 2018 model... Does anyone else have a thought on waiting for the 18 with safety features vs. pulling trigger on 17?

That's the one thing that's had me hold off on buying.

So I have got the option to either wait for a May/June delivery on a cement TRD Pro or I could drive a white TRD Off Road (regular not premium) off the lot tomorrow. OTD prices are:

Pro: 42,500
Off Road: 38,500

Off road does not come with KDSS.

What would yall do? I can see advantages and disadvantages to both, but I am curious to know what yall would do if you had this situation.

I ended up doing the best of both worlds..... I bought the TRD Offroad Premium (3 week wait) and added the TRD Pro Suspension, Skid and Wheels at dealers cost. Spoiled on the inside and tough on the outside! :biggrin2:

Product__________Price_________Labor
Offroad Premium____$37057.57_____________________$41,184.74 OTD (Tax, Title, Registration, Doc, etc. )
TRD Suspension ____$1,400.00______$445.00
TRD Skid Plate______$263.00_______$85.00
TRD Wheels________$696.00_______$80.00

Sub Total $43,543.78
With Labor Total $610.00

Price $44,153.78

Right Toyota, Scottsdale AZ (Jeff Wescott, Fleet Sales)

NOTE: Prices on parts are dealer cost and labor is for outside shop labor cost for dealership.....

you guys are hilarious

once you guys get your vehicle and stop talking MSRP and wait times on the giant circlejerk thread, you filter on to the rest of the forum with an attitude that you own something better than a 4runner.

Meanwhile, they're all 4runners. You don't have a magical vehicle. The only thing most of us like about the pro is the grill, so we buy it.

along with better shocks and tires.

But seriously bro, resale bro.

If you ever plan on adding such things to your front end as high-clearance bumpers or even a hidden winch mount / plate, all of those sensors and radar that will probably show up as TSS options on the '18+ models will make it a real PITA.

Where did he ever say he had a better/magical vehicle? In fact it was the post previous to his he referred to, that specifically stated the trail w/kdss was 'the best version' of the 4Runner. And here you are displaying the exact attitude you're accusing him of.

I plan on adding the following front and rear bumpers...

Never thought about this... I really only care about the blind spot monitors to be honest...

2010-2016 4Runner Front Bumper, 5th Generation

4Runner Rear Bumper & Tire Rack, 5th Gen (2010-2016)

So here's a question...

If I want to add those bumpers... would you go TRD PRO or TRD Off Road Premium?

Someone mentioned if adding bumpers go with the TRD Off Road over the PRO

My TRD Pro is magical. It is mystical. It is a freakin wizzard!

BAM! That is the power of the Pro. For the chosen few...

If you add that much weight, you're going to be replacing the suspension to support it whether you have the turd or the off road. So, if you got a pro you'd be throwing the cost of the slightly upgraded suspension down the drain. Of course you could sell it while still new to recoup some cost, but it doesn't really make sense. Get the off road premium, replace that suspension with something nice, and you'll have a truck with more features and better suspension than the pro. That's what I would do.

You might want to actually take the time to...you know...read the replies...?

Since you didn't take any time to do that - I'll inform you that the Trail Premium with KDSS is actually the magical vehicle. The TRD Pro is the lesser model. Don't worry - YOU actually own the magical vehicle, you can sleep better at night now.

Just wait till the 2018s are announced. Don't overthink it, get what you want after they announce something. Trust me, just stop beating your self up over it. Everyone is just going to tell you to buy what THEY bought since it's the BEST EVER.

I have $500 down on a TRD Pro in cement, only color I really want in the Pro lineup.
I have seen a TRD off road in Black on a dealer lot. It was nice and had a few more options the Pro does not have.
If I get the Cement pro I bet I will be paying MSRP or close to it.

Off Road is already a few thousand less then the Pro and I think the dealer will knock it down some more because they are easier to get.

Choices?

KDSS is not Magical because of the reliability issues. Good luck finding a dealer to repair your broken KDSS. Plus KDSS drives very stiff.

KDSS is just not worth the hassle. If you cannot afford the TRDP then a TEP without KDSS is the best way to go after spending thousands to make it look like a TRDP. :hiding:
