You should be able to tell if sealant was used on the gasket when you take it apart. I don't think a light coat of sealant would hurt (if none was used originally) if for no other reason than to hold the gasket in place if there are no alignment pins.
Also, it wouldn't hurt to check the torque on those bolts near the leak (and any others you can get to) in the pics to see if they have come loose causing the leak. I'd be careful though - you don't want to break off a bolt that may be weakened by corrosion from the leak.
