How is it behind the curve? It's just about the only one in it's class, a midsize body on frame SUV. If I am not mistaken there is only one other and that is the Wrangler. I might be wrong but there is not a lot of competition. Probably one of the reasons it set sales records for the 5th gen last year. And the GX has those options because it's sold from the luxury division and costs more. This is Toyota 101

18k Corolla has safety sense standard. It’s a 5k option on the GX... does any of this makes sense to you? Lol

Just because it’s the only body on frame truck doesn’t mean it shouldn’t offer these standard features even the lower costing corolla has it for standard. You still want to talk Toyota 101??

Makes perfect sense. I'm happy it doesn't have safety sense but then again I don't surf fakebook or text and drive so I don't need it. I also turn my head before changing lanes, etc, you know drive. I don't need the nannies...and Toyota is about making money. When the new 4 comes out, if it ever does, it will have these things. Until then it makes no sense whatsoever from a business stand point to retrofit this safety crap onto the existing design. Now if the 4 was suffering in sales it would have been redesigned earlier, but again, it just set record sales for the 5th gen last year and is selling great this year. Toyota doesn't redesign just to redesign, they do it only when sales are suffering or the normal timeframe whichever comes first. They are cashing in on the 4 and honestly I'm glad cuz I'm afraid they might mess up the next one. But we will see, hopefully I'm wrong

and now will spend the rest of its life rattling and squeaking because like most Jeep/Ram/Dodge products, they don't hold together very well...speaking as an owner of a Ram 2500.

My 02 dodge Dakota r/t sounds like a bucket full of bolts coming down the highway. I hit a big bump and expect to see parts/ nuts n bolts scattered in the highway behind me. I get in the 4runner, I can actually hear a phone call. Lol

I’m all up for not having any nannies in my cars... and actually only prefer manual transmissions etc. However, I’m looking to buy this for my wife and hence would love to have these features as her current car has some of them. 4Runner sells well in the gulf states.. some dealers still have brand new 2016 MY in their inventories in the north east as we speak.

I like the GX, not sure if Lexus will update it for next year.

If they do, I may get one and lift it.

Fix the front end, update the 4.6l a bit, and give it an interior that does not look 10 years old and I'd be tempted myself.

(Income on the hate)... man just left the Jeep dealer with my buddy in the new JL. Toyota definitely seems to be caught with their pants down now that the other dinosaur has made updates, not to mention G-Class adding cup holders and what not haha. Is it wrong for me to be jealous??? I will never buy a Jeep but my friend is quite the fanboy. This new wrangler is nice!!! I kept my ears low during all the noise when it was first announced. Really wanting to buy new SR5 or Pro but how can I when other makes are this nice and 6th gen may be just around the horizon. Come’on Toyota! I’ve got money to spend over here!!!!!

I actually was hearing a lot of rumors about this. Simalar thing to what happened to FJ. Now that Rav and Highlander sell so well, there was no need for a 4Runner. It just doesn’t suit the market. And I think there were no plans to take it past 5th gen, but with the Pros and overall face lift of 5th gen, not to mention the ever growing popularity of overlanding etc. the 5th gen far and away exceeded expectations and now Toyota is fast at work trying to get together a future gen of 4Runner. Just speculation and a little hope on my end I guess.. I see no issue in giving the updates the Tundra got for 2018 to 4Runner to hold everyone over a few years? I know the Tundra is number 1 on the list to get overhauled and produced. Then 4Runner. I suspect 6th gen will not debut at least until 2021 at earliest.

Thats it for the 4runner. Basically fox shocks and a roof rack. Blah. So is it 2020 or 2021 for a redesign? The sales are great, but lots of competition and many frustrated with lack of updates. At least the powertrain, which I wanted updated, is reliable. Oh well..

Yeah, thanks. I guess those NY winters haven't been so kind to my 4Runner. I always powerwashed the underside every spring, but it didn't seem to help very much. The salt and brine solution on the roads is just brutal.

You can't wait for the spring,lol, you have to go to the car wash after every snow storm.

Keep in mind, there's going to be a new entry into the game soon. Ford released teaser pics of the new bronco, and I have to say I'd be lying if I said I wasn't intrigued. I know better than to hold out hope that it'll be good despite being based on the frame, but time will tell. Being that toyota is so conservative I wonder if they're just going to wait to see how bronco, and "small bronco" sales impact the market. Hopefully they don't axe the 4R altogether.
