2020 Toyota Supra

I think they'll be happy to miss that target. 2018 sales for the GT-R = 538 (2017 = 578). You hardly see one on the road. Base price is somewhere around $110k. Great car or not, I think only small exotic-car companies would label 538 units as a good year. Like most automakers, Toyota isn't in the business just to prove they can impress - they're where they are because they sell vehicles. From what I've seen, the Supra will be in the $50k - $60k range (unless demand changes that). More folks can afford that, so if the Supra has wide appeal, it should sell.

When Supra sales dropped off to around 1200 annually in the late 90s (more than the past 2 years combined for the GT-R), they turned it off.

Halo cars are never about the numbers. The legendary Supra was a halo car

The price point alone puts it away from any GT-R comparison. At just under $50k it's in the 370z Nismo, Camaro SS, Audi TT category.

The Supra launch model has a msrp of over $55 grand! And you know they are going to be marked up from there. At that price I would be looking at a stingray (full disclosure, I wouldn’t want a stingray) which I could buy under msrp and probably for less money. Granted, the other 2 models are $50,000 and below though.

I own a heavily modified MKIV and if I were in the market for a new toy the Supra would not even be on my radar.

The Corvette is such a bargain it's no wonder you see them everywhere, and that's probably where I'd begin my search. I use to want a GTR until I drove one and just felt too detached from it, even though they are amazing machines.

The $55k version is only for the first edition models.

*edit* I do see that's what you were saying now too. So I still feel like saying "just under $50k" is accurate.

It's definitely an interesting price point they're going for. I'll be curious to see what their yearly numbers are. I would have expected them to shoot more for the $35-40k range with some future souped up limited versions in the $50k range.

Guess it all depends on your wants/needs. I personally would spend a few extra $'s and get an RS3. But I'm a sucker for the added practicality of a sedan.

This car is a huge disappointment.

If I wanted a BMW I would buy a BMW, not one disguised in a fancy Toyota suit. This thing is all BMW except for the shell... interior, engine, and chassis are all BMW Z4 (it even has the I-drive system). They say the suspension, brakes, and steering have been tuned by Toyota for the Supra platform... big whoop!

There is really no excuse for Toyota taking one of their flagship models and outsourcing all the real engineering on a new model revision to another carmaker. It was sad when they let Subaru build the FT86, and this time around it's an abomination.

They don't even offer a manual trans! 8 speed auto... ONLY... wtf?

:barf: :tsk:

I'd rather spend $40K on a clean TT 6 speed Mk4, put another $10k into BPU and have a real Supra pushing well over 400hp that would eat this thing for lunch.

The front looks like the Sport Design 911 fascia and the ass spoiler treatment is like the 718.

The body looks like the current gen hard top Miata.

The angled doors and windows are straight from a GT-R.

The big-ass headlights remind me of 1970s supercars in the worst way, I'd half expect them to be plexiglass the way they look.

It's a garishly ugly car, which is disappointing on so many levels given how pretty the LC is.

I figure that it will have its share of fanbois who will go on at length as how it doesn't matter that it has a gutless engine because it's how well it handles, dealers will add 10-15k to MSRP and this will fade into obscurity about as fast as the 86. I'm sure most will sell to the tuner crowd in Cali where all good Japanese cars go to die by shitty mods.

Comparing within the price range:

ISF vs. M3/M4 vs. crappy 'Supra'?

Or MK4 Supra with some good mods.

It's pretty funny to me that people can complain about a lack of power/perfomance in a car without ever driving it. Performance is about much more than just HP. Not to mention their claiming 4.1 in a 0-60. That seems like plenty of power to me.

The 2020 Toyota Supra Is Finally Here With 335 HP, Does Zero to 60 in 4.1 Seconds

"It’s smaller and lighter than its predecessor, and this time around it was benchmarked against the Porsche Cayman and Boxster."

If it can keep pace with both of those cars, then I'd say it's going to be a pretty sweet car to drive.

I have no doubt it'll be fun to drive. I would never own one simply on principle... it's a BMW!

IMO Toyota is putting finances ahead of brand loyalty here. True Toyota fans, the ones who have had nothing but Toyotas in the driveway for 20+ years, have been waiting for the new Supra for a long time. It only seems right that Toyota should dedicate the engineering resources to create a vehicle from the ground up that is ALL Toyota to pay proper respect to the model/nameplate.

To me, this is the same thing as releasing a re-branded GM product as the "NEW" 3rd gen Tundra, or a re-branded Range Rover as the "NEW" LC 300 series. This thing is a BMW, through and through, like the FT86 was a Subaru.

It seems that Toyota is not expecting to sell enough of these "Supras" to justify the cost of developing/engineering an entirely new platform from the ground up, so they put a Toyota badge on a BMW and will ride the wave of profit generated by people (who simply want the hot new item) lining up to overpay for these cars just to have the Supra nameplate on the back.

Once the available stock of serviceable mid-late 90's to mid 2000's Toyotas runs out, I see myself giving up on the brand.

Thank you.

I think some people here aren't looking past their own ideas of what the Supra should be. I'm not in the market to buy one, and neither are most of the people commenting. I think the guy who is in that market is able to drop $50k-$60k on what will likely be his daily driver. So he's perhaps 35-65 years old, and likely doesn't care about winning horsepower wars and stoplight drag races. He wants a nice, comfortable, sporty car that's 'fast enough' and drives nicely.

Maybe he's like me, and has owned a Supra at one time, so the name is attractive in a nostalgic sort of way. When I had mine, it didn't matter to me that it wasn't the fastest or best-handling car that I could afford. I wanted a Supra, so that's what I bought. I was thrilled to own it. I think Toyota knows the demographic they're aiming for better than any of us do. None of us will know if they hit it until the car hits the showroom and starts selling.

Yes, it would be great if they stuffed 700 horsepower into it and made it the top-handling car on the planet. They COULD do that - they are capable. But it wouldn't be available for sub-$60k.

My two cents.

Came pretty close to buying a 97 NA Supra years ago for a great price (8k or so) but didn't regrettably. This new Supra is just flat out awful and really doesn't deserve the badge.

Benchmarked against the Porsche 718?

Yeah, Toyota, good luck with that.

Engine's in the wrong place if that's what your competition is.
