Found some educational video's to help me pro/con.

Good video explaining the operation of the E-locker. Now that I see it operate, gotta say, there is definitely a possible weak spot with heavy offroading, since it engages and dis-engages as you roll backwards and forwards, as opposed to the ARB, which I believe acts like a spool [period, no unlocking possible, when working correctly] when it's engaged. (this is of course, aside from the seal/leak/complexity issues that plague some ARB's)

Here's some trail footage of the disengagement issues folks were/are having - wonder if the 12v source is the issue or if it's the design?

And here's a few i found for the ARB.

The rubber seals and locking ring are a wear item, and since the 8" front IFS is fairly well buried behind skid plates and possibly other assemblies, it might be a pain in the butt to pull and maintain (have to plan $$$ for maintenance as needed, maybe?) 4runner locker is probably a bit different, but I think it's the same concept as the Jeep D44 locker.

Here's a bloke who's diagnosing issues with his ARB. Again with a rear Dana-style axle - diagnosing is a bit easier. I think this would be a HUGE pain with an front IFS diff

I've been running a front ARB for about 220K miles and use it all the time. Still on original seals and haven't done anything to it. Knock on wood.

In theory, I like an e-locker for simplicity and reliability, but in practice, I have had a lot less trouble with my ARB than the factory rear e-locker. The instant on/off is way better than the e-locker as well. The e-locker just won't engage when you need it to. Usually have to shift into neutral and roll backwards and turn side to side to unload the rear diff enough to get it to engage on a hill or obstacle.

Have you had any issues with the factory rear locker "disengaging"? Mine will lock-in just fine but disengaging I have to roll forward until it makes a loud Pop noise. Not a good noise to me personally, but that might be normal. Anyone experience this?

No popping here, but disengagement while on several trails in Moab took a bit of a back/forth dance sometimes. That said, it was a game game-changer as far as traction. No issues while engaged.

i dont have that problem either with my oEM rear locker.

I have to drive car back and forth for a few feet like a moron though, but its pretty silent when i disengage and engage it.

My front arb locker is silent other than the initial compressor turning on, and is instant.

Yea, mine is no more eager to unlock than to lock most of the time, but I usually don't care as much about unlocking, I just go until it eventually unlocks. Sometimes it makes some noise from a click to a pop. Doesn't really worry me, that little motor sliding the collar isn't doing anything with enough force to cause anything to break for sure.

I've heard about others having issues with the compressor riding under the hood. That heat/vibration do a number on them. Wonder if another mounting location would improve/lengthen that replacement cycle.

I am reluctant to do an under-hood install for similar reasons. I live in Phoenix, so the summer just sounds like a perfect recipe for a cooked compressor.

The dogs ride behind the seats, so I'm still trying to figure out what location would actually work for a hard install for me. Any ideas?

I've been running Viair under hood for 9 years and over 300k miles without any issues. It's not quite Phoenix hot here, but it regularly gets to 105
