20k first recorded oil change - used 2023 SR5

Thinking about becoming a 4runner owner again. Found a used 2023 with the specs I want (white 2023+, no 3rd row, under 30k miles, not a previous rental) and came across this, which is the look I always wanted to go for

my only concern is that there's really no service history before 20k mikes. I've read and generally people think this isn't a concern as a lot of people like to do the work themselves.

I just wanted to get a couple thoughts here, too, before going further on the price negotiations.

I change my own oil once the warranty runs out. If I ever buy new again I will change my oil at the start. The oil change kids ripped out several rubber covers for the oil change area, stripped the bolts in the skid plate and other things. You don't void your warranty if you do change your own oil, you just need to keep receipts. I do my own maintenance tracking. If I travel and cannot do it myself, I will have it done at a Toyota dealership. I never go to an oil change store.

If I were you I'd have the car checked out for any lack of oil change and change the oil myself so I know the type of oil, brand etc. and when it was done.

Is this a dealership? You should be able to obtain the previous owner's contact information and give them a call. If this is a private sale did you ask the owner about the oil changes?

yes, this is from a dealer. Truck as 25k miles now, apparently service was done last summer at 20k miles at this same dealer that is selling.

I've asked if they have any previous records from the owner and they do not. If you check the link, they did some upgrades so I'm hoping that means they knew to keep up with the maintenance but you never know.

But then on the other hand, if they did their own oil changes, why take it to the dealer all of a sudden last year for the 20k service.

I didn't know dealers would give out previous owners info like that.

I though Toyota had records that were keep on file per the serial number of each vehicle, but yes, service work would have had to have been done by a Toyota dealer for these records to be in place. I would ask the dealer to call the owner of this vehicle and ask about what service work they had done to the vehicle and when, obviously you can't call, but the dealer can.

Ive done my own oil changes since about 50k and took the last oil change 95k to a local shop since the oil filter housing was stuck. As for dealer releasing previous owners I really wouldnt want to be contacted about a previous car but that will vary per owner.

So I guess we can agree there are a few reasons why the dealership might not do the oil change or that it wouldn't be reported to Toyota/Carfax.

Assuming the dealer isn't able to gain access to any previous service records (I've asked already if they have them and they said no), should this vehicle even be in consideration?

Seems expensive to me for a used 2wd base 4runner but I am not in tune with the latest used car prices.

Yeah, used prices suck. I've been looking for a few months. This is about as good as it gets, you might find one a little cheaper for bone stock, zero upgrades at all. A ton, though, in the 42-45k range for sure. SR5P up near high 40's often (which is what I'd really like to find)

I would probably tell them I'd do $41k otd but I'm sure that's a few grand off what they want after all of the add on fees, etc.

I'll guess they didn't want some newbie lube tech hack over-torquing and stripping fasteners on their 40k+ vehicle.

That's who was doing oil changes when I was a Master Tech at a Toyota dealer years ago. So when I bought my latest 5th gen, I wasn't about to let someone of that 'skill' level anywhere near my 4Runner.

I asked them if they'd give me the oil and filter instead, as I had already paid for it in the price of the vehicle, and they would save on the time having their hack, excuse me 'lube tech', do the change. They agreed to that.

The fact that I had been a Master Tech at a different Toyota dealership where the service manager had been a service writer and personally knew me, probably was the main factor in their agreeing to do so.

If they hadn't agreed to give me the oil and filter, I would have just bought the oil and filter. Having my 5th gen unmolested by hacks, is worth that cost to me.

Maybe it was just my state and that was a long time ago. Once, long ago, I did ask for, got and contacted a previous owner. After that, if I bought used, I bought from the owner and not off a lot. I guess they stopped doing that.

Is there the offer of any warranty provided by the dealership? Otherwise, can you take it to a different shop and get the cylinders scoped? (probably not since he wouldn't be able to sell it, plus liability)

Since newer cars use synthetic oil and with a 10K change, at most it's missed one oil change. As long as it had oil I would think it would be okay, even to miss a change. But you pays your money and takes your chances with used.

It's low mileage and it has aftermarket parts on it, I can't imagine that the oil was never changed. Did you ask the dealer to change it before the sale? I'd want to be present to see the oil coming out and inspect the filter, but like others have said I'm sure it's fine and should have been done under Toyota Care if not done by the previous owner. No reminder sticker on the windshield I'm assuming? These trucks also have a maintenance reminder every 8-10k miles so if that light isn't on someone reset it at some point...

Oil Analysis?

You could have Amsoil analyze a sample of the oil in the crankcase for about $40. Don't know what other companies charge, but there are others like Blackstone, too. With the unusual oil change history it would let you know what is going on inside now. That data would be part of my due diligence for this truck in order to sleep better. Just my $.02. Good luck.
