22RE Performance Stage 2

OK so the wait is finally over, and the 22RE performance STAGE 2 is in!

Engine feels and sounds great. Really nice throttle response, and lots of torque.
Very smooth...way better than the rebuilt one I inherited from the previous owner of my truck two years ago.

I've only got about 150 miles on it now - I'm told it wont reach it's potential until it breaks in at 2500-3000.
I'll report back in a couple weeks.

I had Jim add the following to the engine:
Water pump
Spark plug wire stay kit
Denso spark plug OES
Front crankshaft pulley
Crankshaft pulley bolt
Dipstick tube with hold down clip
Oil pressure sending unit
PCV VALVE
EGR cooler plate kit
Exhaust manifold stud, nut and bolt kit
All new Stainless Steel Heater pipes (shipped separate)

My mechanic is about 45 minutes away, so I didn't take a lot of pics and document the install.
But Snobbds already did a pretty good job at that with his write up on yotatec from a few years back.

Otherwise 22reperformance was very easy to work with. (probably easier than working with me )
They always picked up the phone, or got right back to me.
I can tell they care about their customers and want the best for them and their engines.
They're also a good source for OEM parts and recommendations.

(Only one minor complaint - engine didnt come with an oil cap.
You'll see in the pics I re-used my old one, which works fine...it would just be nice if you get an oil cap with a new engine...
22reperformance makes a billet one sold separately, which I'll probably order.)

Looking forward to breaking it in!

I wanted that, too but could not wait so I went local rebuild.

BTW, Did you say yours is a 1989, and I remember you saying you ordered a Hotshot?
However, I notice the starter relay in inner fender... Meaning, it would be easy to fix its wiring; NO NEED FOR HOTSHOT to fix intermittent no-crank.

Just verify that wiring is wrong. Most likely IT IS. Then rewire with one snip, one solder/splice, fuse and a foot or so of wire....

I didn't mess with the exhaust. I thought about a header, but put the money towards other stuff.

The previous owner maintained it well for years, but no exhaust mods to my knowledge.

I did this and it solved the same problem for me. Just a foot of wire, an inline fuse, and hooked directly to battery. Been trouble free aince I did it a year ago!

$3k for the engine, $400 core, $260 shipping...

Wow that's super expensive! That's why swaps are more common. But if you want to stay stock then I guess you have no choice. Glad your happy with it and make sure you keep to the break in schedule!

I think it's well worth it. I was about to order same, but was hesitant because of the long wait, and someone at our office referred me to a well-known local shop so I went local.

Well the real cost is the six month wait...otherwise it's not inexpensive, but here's how I look at it:

What does Jasper or Powertrain charge for a 22RE?

Powertrain was $1900, plus core and shipping.
I think Jasper was over $2K plus core and shipping.
Anyone ever dealt with Powertrain or Jasper?

Putney's stock 22RE is $2500 plus core and shipping.
I decided to pay the extra few hundred for a better engine that should last as long as the first...hence a lot of the reason for this thread

I considered rebuilding mine, but it had already been rebuilt 25K miles ago by the previous owner. Then once we pulled it out, we realized it was over-bored...maybe the reason it overheated and blew a gasket?....Even then, the cost for me to take it to a machine shop and rebuild with a decent kit would still be pretty expensive...

But Hey no-doubt that TDI swap you did is awesome. (One of the better swaps I've seen IMO) I considered doing a Tacoma swap but simply didnt have the resources...and even if I did, I doubt it would be cheap.

So with no airbags, ABS and (In a week) no roof...the 22RE is a good fit. I appreciate the vehicle for what it is and what it was meant to be. The little Stage 2 is more than enjoyable...just getting better by the day.

Besides, the wife has a 2016 turbo SUV that rips through traffic, and barely recognizes 80 MPH. But one difference between that car and my first gen is that, the first gen has retained its value, if not appreciated. I've probably got at least $10K invested in it, and around here with the condition it's in, I could sell it for that. Hence staying with the stock ideology, with modern improvements...

It's time for me to tackle the engine swap as well. My 1986 is now at 290K, It has a lot of blow-by and the timing chain just started touching the case.

22RE Performance is high on my list, I'm only worried about the 6 month wait with my engine in the state it's in.

When you were researching engine options, did you ever look into Yota1 engines? If so, was there any specific pros/cons you recognized that led you to 22RE Performance rather than Yota1?

Congrats! They run great. I have a 22RE Stage 2.5 that runs beautifully. Have about 10K miles on mine so far.

Hey Felita, I will have to look back at my records and see.
When I ordered the engine, I got a bunch of add ons, (stainless heater pipes, etc)
so the total was not cheap. Did you call 22re and ask when they might start taking orders?
That's annoying they are so backed up. Engine runs great. zero issues.
Is got a bit more power, but it's still a 22re.
