265/65/17 vs. 265/70/17 - Specific Tires

I realize this is a heavily posted subject but I have spent the last hour searching for a specific answer with no luck. Apologies in advance for duplication.

I have an 07 T4R Sport and in need of new tires. The truck will be passed off to my wife in the next few weeks as I transition to a new Tundra. Wife is in sales and spends a ton of time on the road- beyond acting as her daily driver the T4R will also be our weekend rig and mountain/camping rig.

That said a few considerations: I personally dislike the factory 265/65 look and since I am in the market for tires I am considering a slight step up to a 265/70. My wife has asked that the 4R maintain ride comfort and noise, otherwise that’s about it. I have read all the posts about an aggressive AT tire and "stuffing" the front wheel well without a lift (Note: at some point I might consider a 1" lift to level the front end but for now I just focus on tires). I am considering the Dueler A/T Revo @ 265/70. I am told that an aggressive tire like the BFG A/T would stuff the wheel well, rub, increase noise & decrease ride quality where the Revo would be a more appropriate tire if I jumped up a size. Does anyone have this setup without a lift or can anyone speak to ride quality, noise and potential rubbing? Any other A/T tire recommendations that might fit the bill?

If this is going to be your wife's DD, and she drives a lot 'on-road', why would you want to upsize & go with an offroad tire if it will lower MPG's and mess with the speedometer/odometer? Sounds to me like you're just basing off your decision off aesthetics. Don't get me wrong, I've spent 'stoopid' amounts of cash on aesthetic upgrades on my rig. I would recommend the Michelin Cross Terrains. They are an awesome tire, especially if you're only a weekend offroader, and by offroader I mean go on a mild trail to get to your camping site.

Downsides, they aren't cool looking when you compare to the REVO. ANd they cost a lot, but they're straight performers.

Another good point, I realize that MPG will decrease but I made the assumption that it would be minimal to the point where I shouldnt consider it a factor...any indication what the MPG loss would be?

Ultimately I figured this would be a good time to upsize since I need to replace the tires anyways, but if the cost (MPG, Ride Quality, etc) isn’t worth the return in aesthetics I might as well stay at the 265/65. Figured it would be worth checking with everyone who has been through this exercise. Thanks again everyone!

Here's what I'd do, but this is just me. I'd pick up a set of 255/75/17 Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor's. Several on here have them and are very pleased. Most with 265/70's notice .5-1 mpg difference. Most with 255/75's notice no change (or some even a slight increase) in gas mileage. These tires are pretty good, they're not Revos but will suit your needs. You'll save a few hundred by going with these. I'd go ahead and invest in a leveling kit (you'll probably need it to clear them). Myself, I'm running a Toytec spacer and FJ Cruiser springs up front. I got 1.5" of lift with that setup, and total cost was under $100. You could also get the Daystar Budget Boost spacer, it'll give ~2" of lift for $40. You can check the link in my sig for my write up on the tires/lift. I've just had the tires a week, so I can't comment on gas mileage. However, this thread explains a lot and was a great help to me.

with upsizing to 265/70 your speedo will be off by about 2 mph at 60, so you'll really be doing 62. in my opinion, thats nothing to worry about. around town it will be on. some guys even say they think the speedo reads more accurate, but 2 is what mines off by, (checked by police road side radar) they will fit with no lift, but the bfgs my rub slightly at full turn since they are a more squared off tire, easy fix tho. ur mpg will depend more on if u lift the front than that little difference in tire size. revo 2 may be a better choice for your/her needs, road noise is slightly more than the stock (dunlops i assume) but they will handle & ride much better in bad weather. michelin ltx or cross terrains are another good choice, or hankooks, perelli scorpions & such, since she travels alot.

I agree with simple. This is your wife's daily driver. Comfort and quiet are her priorities. It isn't your toy anymore.

I've put about 50k miles on my Michelin CrossTerrains and I love them. You won't like the look, but your wife will like the comfort and quiet.

Thanks for the help everyone, still not sure I completely have my answer but with your help I am a little closer. As i've said prior, though it will be my wifes daily driver it is also the weekend rig so finding something that offers traction and looks while maintaining her on-the-road goals is the balance that I am trying to strike. I will look up the Michelin CrossTerrains...thanks again for all the help...

I have the Revo's on my T4R in that size. I get just a little under average for my mpg, but I they're great, handle well on and off road. No considerable road noise either.

But... my next set of tires are going to be the GY Silent Armor's in 255/75... you can get them for just over $100 each.

What about the Mich LTX M/S2 in that size? That might be the perfect compromise. I just drove a buddies Ridgeline with them. He went up one profile to 70. It was pretty sweet, quiet, handled good etc. He said it does very well in the rain and was very impressive in this years (Atlanta) snow and ice.
