Do you guys find big trucks (F-250s, Chev 2500s) with stock tires look really fruity after your eyes get used to looking at our Runners with over-sized tires?
Hey all. I lifted my '02 very slightly using a OME/Bilstein combo. The result is it is sitting a tiny (maybe 1/2" front and back) taller than the tall '99. I really don't consider it lifted, really - just brought up to where the height should have been in '02, and the ride is really great (I swear like brand new).![]()
Anyway, I want/need to get new tires but don't want to simply replace the 265/70/16 I have now. I'd like to go a little larger but avoid rubbing.
I've seen here that the 265/75/16 will work, and maybe that is the right number if they are 32" tall...my understanding is if you get to 33" you have to start carving away in spots to avoid rubbing.
My question is: I'm wondering if anyone has used 275/75/16 and why or why not? I just don't know a lot about tires and am wondering how big a difference that is or if anyone had experience with them.

FYI 265/75/r16 is the largest tire size you can run and still have a fully inflated full size spare in the stock spare tire location.
Stock (original) suspension on my 2000 SR-5 with 265/75/r16 General Grabber HTS60 tires. No rubbing (but I never went four wheeling with this configuration).

You won’t find anything but a 17” rim in 275 width. I searched for months on my tires before pulling trigger. Wider is what I really wanted, but I didn’t plan on a lift. 2 months after buying tires I ended up with a small lift [emoji849]
265/75 or 285/75 if you’re in a 16” rim. 265/75 looks great with up to a 1-2” lift.
I don’t think I was lifted in this pic. 265/75 duratracs![]()

Is that a '97 Desert Dune SR5 with the stock black flares? That was my first 4Runner. I put 250K on it and sold it in '06 to a guy who was going to ship it to Syria (where I'm sure it is still chugging away). Should have kept it.
If you do get any rubbing, get a new front alignment with the caster 'maxed out' within the stock range. That will get you the clearance you need at the back of the front wheel well.Thanks. I did end up getting the BFG 265/75R16s last night. Picking it up today. I bought a new spare too, and the guy at Belle Tire looked at me like he thought it was nuts spending all that on tires for a 20 year old truck. LOL But he didn't realize the work I've done to it and how clean it is (only 115K). I DO like the idea of the 5 tire rotation, and they rotate them twice a year for you for free. So that's the plan. It's my daily driver now but working from home I'm only putting 3-4K a year on it driving up north occasionally.

The 225/75-15 tires are MUCH smaller than the larger factory 265/70-16 tires - and came with a different axle ratio and brakes (front calipers/rotors and rear wheel cylinder). Is the 265/75R16 rubbing or not rubbing down to the particular tire or the model year of 4runner?
I want to put 265/75R16 Geolandar AT4 (just came out) on my 1998 4wd, I don't want it rubbing in any range of travel. I haven't modified my suspension at all. Also I want a matching spare, so will I be able to keep a 265/75R16 in the stock spare location?
The stock tire size on 3rd gens is 265/70R16 or 225/75R15 depending on option. If a tire size matches the first and last number on your current tire, it'll work with your rim, but it doesn't mean it wont rub once mounted.
Thanks. Forgot to say my 4runner came with the larger wheel size, so wheel size wont increase an inch. If my 4runner already has 265/70R16 will my alignment already be correct to fit 265/75R16 tires? The 225/75-15 tires are MUCH smaller than the larger factory 265/70-16 tires - and came with a different axle ratio and brakes (front calipers/rotors and rear wheel cylinder).
There is no need to modify the suspension to fit 265/75-16 (or the equivalent 265/70-17) tires - but the alignment does need to be correct. If the caster is set high enough, it moves the wheel forward in the front wheel well and it will clear the rear side of the fender. Wheel offset that pushes the wheels out of the wheel well (or spacers) can also cause clearance issues. But the 1" larger tires on factory wheels with no spacers will always fit with the correct alignment.

There's no way to know at this point how your front end is aligned. You can do the tires then see if you get a little rubbing in the front.Thanks. And does anyone know if I'll still be able to fit a full size spare tire?
