265's or 285's???

I like em better than the 265 i had previous but this is the first day with them on and i notice they are quieter and better handling than the bfg's lets hope they stay that way.

I have the Yoko AT/S, LR C, and they are a great tire. I have beat the heck out of them. They have taken me everywhere. I have wheeled hundreds of miles offroad on some of the hardest trails in Moab. On road they ride great. I wouldn't get them if I wheeled in mud.

I may strongly consider the Duratracs when I need new tires. (it may be a while, the Yokos are wearing like iron) They will add to the appearance of my rig, they look awesome. And I have heard that they ARE awesome.

The 265s will actually be wider on the 8" wide LC wheels, compared to the 7" stock wheels. The LC wheels have a little backspacing so that will push them out a little more too.

I've heard great things about the Yoko's, but they are on the more plain side for looks. I think I would have to have 285's with those. Also the main place I wheel is Hollister and it gets really muddy so the Yoko's wouldn't help that much.

I really want to get Duratracs for the snow as I plan to go up a lot this year. Also they look awesome and they've gotten good reviews in the rain as well. I think the LC wheels will work perfectly with the duratracs and give me the look I've been wanting.

255 if i had a choice cause i like the pizza cutter look :biggrin2: but got a good deal with 265. i'd go 265.

I just can't get into the pizza cutter look. They might be fine with the LC rims, but I'm not a real fan. 265's are skinny enough and that is pushing it.

Didn't you just put the KM2's on? Any reason you switched? Those Hankooks were also an option, but they cost a bit more and don't have much of a discount.

the km2 were unstable and wandered all over the highway after i put them on because of the altered tread it was not safe so i removed them and sold them off.

^That's what I was worried about with those KM2's. It just didn't look like the greatest DD tire with the altered tread. Too bad because I might have bought a set if they weren't altered.

285 looks very good but more roll resistance, less power (regear), some stress in front driveline, rubbing, less RPM ( good thing ), etc.

265 looks good too but better with 8" rims.

Tall tire = More diff clearance ( Very important for off road ).

Pizza Cutters are my favorites ( 255/85 and 235/85 ).

As far as a rig that offroad's, I too would choose a 255 over a 285 any day of the week unless I got a killer deal on the 285's. Less drama over UCA rubbing and I prefer the pizza cutter look. I always thought a 33x12.5x15 looked goofy (too wide, not proportional), even though a 285 is 33x11.5 I think it still looks better a hair narrower. Personal preference I guess. I believe the LC wheels are wider, so maybe they'll clear the UCA with 285's? There's going to be rubbing issues no matter which way you go with with either two. Nothing minor trimming couldn't handle (depending on how much lift you have, of coarse).

As a DD, a 265 is the perfect compromise between MPG & highway driving because 285's are more likely to hunt for gears the second you hit an incline. You'll probable drop 1-1.5 mpg too, especially if you do a lot of city driving. Just food for thought.

Thanks for all of the responses guys. These are the things I thought about all the time, but couldn't make my mind up myself. I got a better idea by hearing from people who have 285's and 265's, especially Ripcord since he runs some of the lightest rims and s/c and he is going down to 265's. For my DD I will keep them at 265 for now and maybe down the road I will bump up to a 33. My ultimate goal is to get a 1st gen so I can beat on that and turn my 3rd gen into a mall crawler. Nothing like the thrill of climbing over a speed bump.

Here is the breakdown I did at Tacomaworld.
Ok let me check to see if my math is correct. Using tacocolin's links and discounts I can get a set of 265/75/16 duratracs load C for ~$592.

Here's how I got that price.
4 wheel parts has the tires for $192 piece.
771.96 for all 4.
5% off from 4 wheel parts so $733.36
3.5% off from ebates.com $733.36 = $707.69
$75 ($100, but $25 membership fee) from Treadlightly = $632.69
$40 for Goodyear rebate = $592.69

Not sure if there is tax in all of that, but hopefully my math is correct. If so, then these might be my next tire.

*Update* So I was looking at the deals going this weekend and I looked more into the deals I mentioned in the post. Looks like the cheapest I can get a set of Duratracs are for $650 from 4 Wheel Parts. Tax is included in the price above, so it's a bit more expensive than I thought. Unfortunately I think I will have to pass on them. They are a bit out of my price range after mounting and balancing. I'm bummed, but I have a $130 registration due and $200 for contacts plus Christmas shopping so they aren't going to work out this time.

So now my options are down to Treadwrights for $500 shipped, used tires if I can find some or these. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/sale-...-five-16x7-fj-wheels-tires-la-cali-900-a.html I don't mind getting the Treadwrights, but I was looking for something a bit more aggressive looking. They yoko's in the for sale is a great deal as I would get a full size spare and rims. I would probably sell the rims and use my LC's or keep the FJ's and sell the LC's and pick up some spacers to bring them closer to the fender edge. Still mulling it over.

I know what you mean, but I'm going to be going on a trip to my Cabin for New Years and need tires before that. The current set are worn unevenly from the PO causing a very bumpy ride and they howl down the freeway. I don't feel all that comfortable driving my daughter 3+ hours in the 4runner with them and my fiance can't stand the ride. My 4runner is also the 4wd in the family so we have to take it. Plus I kind of have to use the money from my bonus right away otherwise it gets dwindled down with other purchases for the family. It sucks supporting 3 people on 18/hr.

Yes and no. I know I can get ~$200 for my 5 stars and probably $100-200 for the tires I have. That money was agreed would go back into the bank account if I got new tires. I can get the Duratracs, but that would leave me with nothing left over and cutting it close financially. I also need new rear shocks pretty bad, so I have to put $85 aside for those. I may try to wait till I get my bonus to see how much I can spend as well, but that is in 2 weeks and it will be cutting it close.

I know I'm being real back and forth and indecisive, but we've had some unexpected major expenses and I'm not sure if I will be getting a raise next month. Just trying to keep some money available if other items come up.

Have you thought about maybe checking craigslist for a set of used tires to get you through for the holidays and your trip? Nothing fancy, just something safe and reliable until you have the funds to get what you REALLY want...? I'm with Clemson on this one. You don't have to settle for tires you don't want and will be stuck with for awhile. Find someone who already made that mistake and buy THEIR used tires...?
