275/55/20s /Limited - Free Tires? Yes sir!

This past week I went to a Discount Tires in Denver to replace my Nitto's Terra Grappler 275/55/20s with another new set.

They refused to put these non-spec tires on - even though they sold and put on a set 2 years ago. I left, because the Terra Grappler's (IMO) rock - and after 30K were flawless.

Shortly after got a call from Discount Tires, saying they would put on a free set (all 4) of Nittos Terra Grappler G2 265/50/20s. Which they did do yesterday.

The 265s seem tiny compared to the 275s. I imagine I'll miss the solid weighted and planted feeling the 275s delivered. Those tires were excellent - took a beating off-road - and were great on road.

Oh the humanity of actually liking the OEM 20s.

I know the EOM 20 wheels and tire option discussion has been beaten to death on T4R - but figured some(one) might be interested - and maybe in a free set of tires. (EXPANDED... meaning if you have tires - that don't fall in the spec range - Discount Tire may replace yours for free - assuming you bought at them at Discount Tire)

what am I not comprehending? you went in with 30k on tires wanting new tires, you left because they wouldnt mount what you wanted and then they called and said come get free tires?

Somebody was freaking out about liability I suspect... They wanted you to get the non-spec tire off that truck bad.

It's a win for you though, who doesn't like free tires?

I've read this a few times and can't figure out wtf is going on. They refused to sell tires, but later decided giving you free ones was a good idea? Sounds like a pretty shitty way to run a profitable business...

I'm not sure what some of you aren't getting... I wanted the same 275/55/20s that I had (which I purchased from them 3 years ago) - so I left. Shortly after, they called (obviously because of the liability) and offered me a free set of tires (the 265/50/20s) for free. So I took them up on their offer.

I get it... A couple years ago you bought a new set of NTG 275/55 R20's at 'Discount Tire' and had them mounted/balanced there. (Fast Fwd...) The other day (30k miles later) you wanted to replace the old Nitto's Terra Grappler 275/55 R20s with a brand new set of the same, but Discount tire 'Management' refused to do it because of the non-spec'd, 275mm width tire on a 7 x 20 inch rim...

"This breaching of safety (and legal) guidelines has 'apparently' gotten the attention of Executive management; who is now trying to cover their @##'s" to avoid any legal consequences" ...is that it? lol! Like you, I think I would have taken their offer of the free tires as well ...BUT... I don't think I could go back to the comparatively smaller '265/50' tires after cruisin' around on the 275/55's for three years. I would have to find a way to sell those brand new tires Right away with ZERO miles on them (maybe on Craig's list) even if only for a few hundred bucks, add it to the money "that was already allotted to buying new tires" and then buy the size I really wanted; "It's already a BIG win/win for you anyway!"

But 265/50/20 per Nitro's websites clearly states it must be on a minimum of 7.5" wide rim. The limited wheels are 7" wide.

So... They are still on the hook for not selling you and installing a correct sized tire.

My 275/55 R20 on stock rims the day I bought them (Oct 2012). The Stock tire on the left... Yokohama Geolander 245/60 R20, Still on rim and "fully Inflated"(35 psi). And on the right... the "Not yet on the rim" Good*Year Eagle LS-2. "Note how much bigger it is without even being mounted!"

They did the same for me, except I wanted to keep my Druatracs, so the bought me new rims
