275/65 R18 Recommendation, Experience, Suggestions

I have been lurking all over the forums trying to find out what is the best A/T tire for that size (275/65 R18).

I have a limited Fifth Gen with a terrible rim size, so I will be going with an 18" rim, possibly the MHT KRANk'S http://mhtwheels.com/wheel.cfm?cat=930

I thought I was pretty set on the "Hankook Dynapro" but from a recent extended review, I am pretty deterred from these tires see New tires installed...Hankook Dynapro ATM

If you are reading this post and have that size tire, and are so kind to take a minute and write a review, please try to address some of the below concerns:

1. Noise, did it increase after certain millage.
2. On/Off road manners.
3. Wet condition handling/ Over all - Safety plus/negatives.
4. Warranty issues/Concerns and the over all wear and tear.

Nothing wrong with it but I'm wondering why you decided on that size? IIRC 265/70/17 would be almost the same diameter as the OEM 20" and you may have many more options.

To maintain the same clearance, I guess compensating for the 20" wheels.
Makes sense? I actually want to stay close to OEM as I can, maybe a little more clearance with out having to do a lift.

Which raises a good point, what tire size is optimal (including rim) to have all around performance?
I know the Trai land SRS come with 17's, is that why you recommended 17's?

I'm more just asking instead of recommending but google a tire calculator and plug in your OEM size compared to say a 265/70/17. You will get the diameter you seem to want with some additional width that will fit perfectly.

And I have not looked but you may well have more options in that size.

Just offering options for humble consideration.

Thanks, I did that and can see that 265/70 17 maybe more of an OEM fit.

My head is going to spin from reading all over the forums and online reviews.

I really wish I can just slap an A/T tire on my stock 20" limited rim :( ... That would just make life so much easier, and cheaper for that matter. :gun4:
 
Agree with phillyd2...I believe someone on this forum had already mentioned that tire selection among 275/65R18 line is pretty limited.
Check into Goodyear Silent Armor. I just posted couple pics.

I have been all over those threads. Problem is they are putting 275/55 R20, which is NOT recommended. I do NOT want to put my wife's safety in danger by any means.

I just wrote Yokohama to see if they have plans to produce a 245/60 20 AT tire.

In the mean while, I'm still wanting other's reviews of their AT tires. Unsuccessful so far

Ukie - do you have any pictures from the front of the tire?
 
Here's a few links showing you some options. I picked these links mainly cause you're post says 18" so I'm guessing you're considering purchasing new wheels as well as tires. If you're going to go to 18" is there a reason you're not wanting to stay with a 20" diameter wheel? I "think" 20" tires might be a little more $$ so possibly that could be a factor.

My family use to be in the tire business so I've spent my share of time mounting/balancing mostly 18 wheeler tires but I'm with ya on NOT putting a 275 55 20 on a stock limited wheel. It blows my mind someone would spend 45k on an suv and then mount a tire like that on a 7" wheel...nty.

I guess 20" is a little over kill, Not really sure what would justify 20" for me? 18" to 20" doesn't look that much better or worse. It is cheaper, and I'm trying to get something as close as possible to OEM fit.

In other words, I don't want to loose MPG's or affect breaking power. The bigger the tire, the slower the breaking - I think, unless someone wants to correct me.
 
If you stick with buying a 20" wheel and go to a 20x9 (20x7 stock), and let's just say a 275/55/20 tire you should be really close to stock height but your tire patch will be larger (better traction & braking)...not to mention it will fill out the wheel well better. 275/55/20 is roughly a 32" tire and plus or minus some change (depending on the brand). I'm seeing more and more 20" wheels now then ever before, I think even some ford crossover thingy has 20's on it. Anyways, gl in your search :cheers:
