285/70 17 - side effects

I'm on 275/70 17 tires now. Am considering the 285/70 17. I have 3" lift. It seems that most people with 285/70 17 found they needed to do a body lift. Curious if anyone is running that size tire without the lift.

There are actually quite a few with 285s sans BL, including myself. For my style of driving/off roading, i have no major rubbing. I havent even chopped my body mount yet and get very little rubbing and only when fully cranked. Granted, there aren't too many of us who rock crawl either so you may need the extra room depending on your tire choice an wheel offset.

EDIT: I see you went with the MT Classic 2. Nice looking wheel but with the negative offset (-12mm @ 9" wide), you will probably be rubbing before most others do. I'd say go for the 1" BL.

You guys don't "need" a bl but it will definitely help with rubbing issues. I ran 285's for a year before I got my bl, with only minor rubbing offroad, but i cut a lot!! Only reason I got the bl was cuz I knew I wanted to run bigger tires at some point and I was getting my sliders welded on. Better to get them welded after the bl.

I'm running 285's with a Daystar lift and no major rubbing issues. I did push the fender liner forward and did some trimming. No body chop mount either.

With your bumper, you'll be fine. I had to pull the rear fender liner aside and smash the pinch weld flat with a small sledge, then cut the corners off my body mounts. No more rubbing. No BL.

im in the same boat, running 275/70R17 and looking to upgrade to 285/70R17, do i need a BL?

I recently installed 285/75R17 on a 17x9 with -6 offset and have rubbing. Tires are a Goodyear Duratrac. Without a body lift I can only turn 1 full turn of the steering wheel before rubbing wheel well liners in a flat parking lot. When flexing the suspension I rub the rear of the wheel well where it meets the liner, the body mount and obviously the wheel well liner in the front. In the rear mine does not work even with body lift i would have to have the rear mud flap removed. Lift is a 3" height adjustable 5100's with eibach coild from Toytec. I actually measured 4" of lift and am going to have to lower the coil setting. If you plan on driving and flexing the system to the max I'd suspect damaged parts unless you remove more than I was willing too. That is my 2 cents, here is my thread.

You won't have any real rubbing issues if you do a body mount chop. You already have aftermarket bumpers so you're good on clearance.

285/75 or 285/70?

I have my coilovers at about 2.5" with my front fender liners pushed forward and my body mounts chopped and I still rub on the rear of the front wheel wells in reverse when turning and sometimes going forward when turning and braking. I may try to take off my wheel spacers which should solve it. Also, Duratracs are slightly bigger than others at 33".

I've got the 285/70/17 Duratracs, spidertraxx, a Shrockworks front bumper and an OME 3" suspension lift. I rub on the body mounts up front when turning. I haven't noticed any rubbing in the rear.

No spacers needed on FJ trail wheels

I can confirm that you can run 285/70r17 on FJ trail edition wheels on our 4th gens with out a wheel spacer.

When I was wanting to make the jump to 285s I was having a hard time finding a simple yes or no answer on wheel spacers, my concern was the tire would jump the UCA.
So I had some 285/70r17 nitto terra grapplers mounted up and I had good clearance between the tire and stock UCA.
Yes of course it rubbed the plastic but not as bad as I though so I removed my mud flaps and moved the liner forward and it’s been perfect.
I was at Gorman the other weekend doing what ever I can to push my suspension to the test and during the whole trip not once did I rub my body mount.
My performance it’s acceptable to me still I’ve lost some power but not enough for it to be disappointed, my fuel economy is still good I’m averaging low 17s(I have not done the math with bigger tires) and I live in the Ventura county area.
All in all I’ve been happy and I do wish I made the jump sooner.

I’m in need of a suspension over haul but I currently have bilstein 5100s with stock UCAs
But no major issues with 285/70r17 on FJ trail edition wheels.

Hey do you know the offset on those wheels? I think they're the same as 5th gen trail (+15) but looking to confirm.

Yep, you're right, early 5th gen trail and FJ had them! My favorite Toyota stock wheels. They're +15 offset, but I don't know about 285 rubbage since I'm running a smaller tire size.
