285/70/17 too big for 3" lift?

Sorry, I meant trimming as no body chop :D I'm fine with trimming though. I dunno. I'll talk to the guys at the body shop today and see what they say.
 
Google and forum searches are your friend ....lurk and ask as much as you need... at the end of the day these people (on the forums) were in the same position you're in at some point during their builds ...also check out some of the members build threads on here ...good source of first hand experience

I have a lot of links saved with people putting 285s on and not many mention body chops. Just some trimming here and there.

And don't get me wrong, I really really appreciate your help, I just get answers that contradict. Yes you have to body chop, no just some trimming. lol

Look at my build thread. Many of the pictures are with the 255's. The last couple are with the 285's. Keep in mind the 255's are very worn by the time these pictures were taken so they would be a little larger new.

I saw a Tacoma getting a 6" lift when I brought my truck in and it had skinny tires on it(not sure the size) and I didn't really care for the look of it.
 
I have 265/70R17s, and I had quite a bit of rub and trimming needed on a 2.5" lift and spidertrax. 285s are much wider than 265s, so I imagine the bumper is going to require some major cutting... 285s are more than .75" wider (7.5% difference). I think you might run into bumper and UCA issues.

As others have suggested, I'd go skinny and taller (better for most snow anyhow). Add Spidertrax, but going skinner allows for easier clearance from the bumper when turning -- and you won't run into the UCA issue.
 
Just bought some Cooper Discoverer STT Pro 285/70/17s and got some family gonna help me shave the body mount and help me trim the wheel wells and fender up :D
 
If you don't want to trim, just doing smaller/skinnier on tire. I run 285/70r17" tires and rub everywhere.
 
You won't have to do trimming if you have atleast a 2.5" lift. Just push the fender liner forward and you'll be fine. You'll only rub when your stuffed.

I put 285's on mine and didn't have to trim anything (besides pushing the liner forward) and never rubbed. Like I said, make sure your lifted atleast 2.5" for this to work. If you put on wheel spacers you'll have to do extensive trimming including the bumper, the fender liner, and the BMC.

i run 275/70/17 Nitto grapplers with bilsteins all the way up and 1.5 wheel spacers in front,i had a rub ,the only thing i needed to do is to unscrew the screw from underneath the bumper that holdsfront inner lining and push that lining inch or 2 forward and screw the screw back in place securing it.

took me about 5 minutes

very very easy.

I'm curious about this because everything I have read indicates that even with a 3" lift 285/70/17's don't fit without BMC, moving fender liner forward, and some have cut their fender!?!?! I can handle a little rub when fully compressed, but I was moving away from 285's to 275's based on info here. Can you post some pics? How much lift are you getting with your Billies?
