285/70/17 too big for 3" lift?

I'm curios about this because everything I have read indicates that even with a 3" lift 285/70/17's don't fit without BMC, moving fender liner forward, and some have cut their fender!?!?! I can handle a little rub when fully compressed, but I was moving away from 285's to 275's based on info here. Can you post some pics? How much lift are you getting with your Billies?

I am running 285/75/16 so I believe it may be a smidge smaller, but still the same concept. The tires are stuffed in there so your not gonna be able to flex as much as your buddies with 265's, but on mine they didn't rub at all (with wheel spacers it another story).

Stuffed:

As you can see it takes up all the wheel well when your flexing. I had no issue with it rubbing on the body mount or even the back or front of the fender. I did have to move my fender liner forward a bit.

My 5100's are at the third notch, 1.75, giving me 2" of lift then another 0.5" with the FJ springs. I was nervous at first when I bought the wheels, with 285's mounted on them, from another member but he assured me it would fit so I went for it. He was right.

I love the look of how it sits on the street, but it would be nice to have smaller tires for offroading and flexing.

Very cool and thank you. Your T4r looks awesome and it definitely shows the 285's will fit. I've got another 15-20k on my Dynapros, but I'm leaning toward 285 BFG ATKO2's when it's time to buy. The 275's weren't available before And I just stuck with the 270's because I knew they would fit with my old spacer lift. Now that I'm a full 3 it's time to go bigger. My runner is probably 75% street so I'm not going to get to crazy chopping, cutting, hammering, etc...to make things fit. I'm also not planning or interested in spacers.

Wheel spacers made it a lot different. I had to do excessive trimming, and I'm still working on it to get rid of rubbing. But the stance is definitely worth it to me. What lift are you on and are you running your stock uca's?

I'm lifted with OME 885 in front and Toytec RCC2.0HD in the back. I'm currently running stock UCA's as I was hoping alignment was going to land in spec. My castor is now at .5 and drives okay, but I know it will drive better with aftermarket UCA's and a Castor of 3-3.5. I'm leaning toward Total Chaos at the moment, but need to get the boss's green light before I do. Hoping to get her done before the Colo Toyota Jamboree in August.

And tires are pretty simple ....
285/70 r17
285 is the top edge of the tire ....or the "part with the tread" or the width

70 is the hight of the tire from the edge of the rim to the outer edge of the tire or the height

Well, at least do your self a favor and don't listen to this guy because this is all wrong. Also keep in mind that metric tire sizes are rounded off anyway, so what rubs on one tire may not rub on another. The exact specs are usually available.

I am gearing up to do my lift now and the best advice I've heard is to adjust my camber bolts for maximum caster (front full in, rear full out) and then have it aligned. This will give the best chance of not rubbing and not needing new UCAs.

Ouch...I guess my experience at Firestone selling and installing tires got my basic idea all wrong ....and I never mentioned anything about standard sizes[emoji14]As far as everything I've told him was basic stuff I've read .....and I told him to read up and search and ask other people because they can share their personal experience with someone who has questions

I kinda felt bad calling you out, but now I'm just worried for your customers. Are you saying you actually work at a tire shop, and have no idea what the numbers on the side of a tire mean? The first is the section width and the second is the aspect ratio, which is not at all what you said. That picture you are using as your guide is of a freaking bicycle tire.

I retract my statements....I had figured the aspect ratio to be the hight of the tire....but all the other post stand ...ask and search...and for the record thr amount of time i was at firestone I've never had issues with customers and I had alot of return customers. ...I am embarrassed though ( the picture was a quick Google search) and thanks for clearing it up[emoji14]

For Pete's sake. If you have nothing constructive to add to the conversation please don't clutter the thread.

Hmm, let's see. I corrected someone else's wrong information. And then added the advice I had been given on how to avoid rubbing. What was the constructive point of your post?

Well, OP, at least let us know how it went. I think the coopers may rub on those fenders with 285s and the STs, but I could be wrong...

Not bicycle tire wrong, but your experience may vary...

i fit my cooper ST Maxx 285/70r17s (which measure out to 33.4 x 11.4) on stock FJ wheels and 1.25" spacers with no body mount chop required. i did have to cut and push plastic and fender flare though. my 35s that im putting on are a different story :behindsofa:

I will be putting them on in about 6-8 hours. I started chopping my driver side body mount today and didn't get it completely off yet. I'll see how much rub I get before I take it completely off. The tires themselves look F**king amazing!

You will likely have to do the body mount chop. Google search (4Runner body mount chop) for details. I have the same set up and it was a must.

Also look at BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 275/70/17. Much cheaper than the 285 version at America's Tire.

So this is the only problem I have come into so far, I haven't done my body mount chop yet but I am going to as the tires are close but I haven't heard much rubbing there(I know it will sound different than tires rubbing on wheel wells)

You won't have to do trimming if you have atleast a 2.5" lift. Just push the fender liner forward and you'll be fine. You'll only rub when your stuffed.

I put 285's on mine and didn't have to trim anything (besides pushing the liner forward) and never rubbed. Like I said, make sure your lifted atleast 2.5" for this to work. If you put on wheel spacers you'll have to do extensive trimming including the bumper, the fender liner, and the BMC.

Good luck!

I rub on my rear fender when stuffed but thats all. I haven't noticed rubbing on body mount, yet, but i'm just going to cut it off anyways. How would you suggest fixing the rubbing on the inner-upper side of wheel well?

If you don't want to trim, just doing smaller/skinnier on tire. I run 285/70r17" tires and rub everywhere.

Finally someone I agree with in this thread. I run 285/70/17's and they rub a lot. So much that the ripped out my inner wheel well cover. Maybe those who don't have rubbing never get off the pavement but even then I rub on the sway bar.

But, I'll add that I really don't care!

From your pictures it looks like your front tires are touching the corner of your bumper. Just trim the corner and get rid of the flat part and move the fender liner forward more.

Here is after I trimmed

As far as the rear of the wheel well that the rear of the tire rubs on (not the body mount, but the actual fender) I am still working on. Gonna lift it another 1" or so and have them move the wheel forward more in the wheel well when I get it aligned.

I'm in the same boat. Got an 03 limited and I have a 3" lift with 1" wheel spacers to put on it. Don't know if I wanna run 285/70/17 or 255/80/17. I'm new to the game so any suggestions are helpful.
