285/70/17 too big for 3" lift?

I'm in the same boat. Got an 03 limited and I have a 3" lift with 1" wheel spacers to put on it. Don't know if I wanna run 285/70/17 or 255/80/17. I'm new to the game so any suggestions are helpful.

The narrower tires will clear easier, with less trimming.

Good info.
I will be running a set of 295/70r17 on stock '14FJC wheels. Own them, but haven't mounted them up yet,
Have an aftermarket UCA. Camburg.
still working on front Lift options. Rear is decided on with the MT LT springs.
Spacers? if needed.
Own a sawzall, plasma, and Mig :)

Updates as it happens

Make sure you post some pics. I'd like to see how it turns out. :thumb:

I'm curios about this because everything I have read indicates that even with a 3" lift 285/70/17's don't fit without BMC, moving fender liner forward, and some have cut their fender!?!?! I can handle a little rub when fully compressed, but I was moving away from 285's to 275's based on info here. Can you post some pics? How much lift are you getting with your Billies?

Well, I have 285's on 0 offset wheels. I had to do everything and I still rub, even on the actual frame. Body mount chop, removed front fenderliner completely, aftermarket front bumper. I still rub on the frame and the rear of the fender where the front of the door is. Next is a 1.5" body lift and I will see if that helps out.

I'll be waiting to see if the BL helps enough for me to do the same!

285 70 17

I just installed 3” toytec boss kit spc uca with stealth sr8 wheels 17” with 285 70 17. The only thing I did was push the front fender liner forward. And no rub. Also still got my mud flaps with no rub. Caster set to 3.5

285/70 R17 Bridgestone Dueler AT REVO 3

Thanks to all the info i found online here i went ahead and installed the 285 Dueler AT REVO 3 on my 2017 4runner TRD off road edition. ( American Trail Edition ). Happy to say with a 3inch Old Man Emu lift installed by dealer i have no rubbing and didn't have to modify a thing. New Alloys will follow next year once the snow tires go back on the stock TE wheels. Thanks everyone for all the info posted.

I also went 285 70 17 today, with a 3"/2" ProComp level kit
front wheel well plastic pushed forward 2" and bumoer trim also heated up the MudFlaps and flattened the bubble section to clear all rubbing issues
running a -12 offset

YellowRaven-

Sweet ride. Did you keep stock UCAs?

I have all the same parts minus the UCA and am deciding if I should just spend the $400 for SPC adjustable UCAs right from go.

So some how 2 of you are talking about 5th gen stats in the 4th gen section?

These guys...
yellow-raven and 2016 4runner sr5...

Seems that the 5th gen require less 'cutting' than the 4th gen and you can get the 285's on with less effort for less lift.
...Or so I have been informed here on the site.

285s on the 4th gen start to get into the BM.
Maybe closer BM to the tire than the 5th?

My 285 Duratracs never rubbed the body mount. Need just the right offset and caster I guess, tire sizes differ a bit too. Camburg UCA's and SCS wheels. They were real close though (less than 1/4") and were worn tires when I got them.

And just to clarify...I was more like 2" front 1.5" rear.
And just rubbing the BM.
After .5" body lift and a cutting of the BM it seems to work with minimal fender rub...so I guess I wound be more like 2.5" with 285s...
...With new mudders.

I am sitting shy of just 3" on tires bigger than 285's. I have 295/70/17s and I had to trim the front bumper and fender flares and do the body mount chop and I still rub. I already chewed up parts of my tires but nothing serious.

Just curious what you are running for wheel specs? It seems that offsets have a lot to do with rubbing issues, regardless of tire size. I’m hoping to get this right because I plan to run rims that are 17 x 9, with a -13mm offset, and 275/70 KO2 (or similar type tires). I know this thread is focused on 285s, just hoping someone who has tried a combo like I’m planning will see this and share their experience.

My wheels im pretty sure are Cragar soft 8's but i do not know if they came in different offsets. I also have 1.25 Spidertrax spacers. If i find out anything more about my wheels i'll be sure to report back.

Gotcha. I’m guessing that it’s the Spidertrax spacers that are the issue based on what I’ve read, because they most likely didn’t have the same offsets as stock to start with. Even with stock wheels, I’d expect some rubbing with 285’s so the further the wheels get pushed out, the worse it gets because of the increase in turning radius. Thanks for adding that info!
