285/70/17 with 1.75" lift?

Anyone running 285/70/17 tires with just 1.75" lift in the front?
I just wanted to see what it looks like?

I have a set of Bilstein that I want to set at 1.75" lift. I'm doing the BMC so I'm hoping that 1.75" will be enough to avoid any rubbing.

I know a lot of people are running 1.75" lift with 275/70/17 tires. But I haven't been able to find photos of 285's?

Maybe I'm not using the right words in the search function?

Anyhow? If you're running 285's with 1.75" lift I'd love to see how your ride looks? and hear about your experience.

Thank you in advance!

P.S. I'll probably run the OME 10mm spacer on the rear to keep it level"

There's some 4runners set at that height in this thread: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/216390-another-bilstein-5100-question.html

Idk about that size tire though. I have mine set to the highest setting and I still had a little bit of rubbing.

im at 2.5 with 275s and at full lock it is real close.... id imagine a fender mod and BMC would be in order unless you are just gonna straight line at the mall. why 285s if you arent gonna reall lift it? I se emore CONS than PROS with that setup

It'll look a whole lot like this. I have just a tiny bit of rub at full lock. I had a small fender bender (not my fault) and had the front bumper cover replaced so I haven't cut the new one yet. Otherwise it's good to go. I'll do a trim soon.

All 4runners are slightly different though, so where some rub others don't. Lift makes no difference in rub unless you go long travel or bracket lift.

I'll be doing the BMC and the fender mod.
The reason I'd like to stay low is to keep as much articulation range as possible. and I don't want to replace the stock UCA's (Too much of a PIA)
I did the 3" lift and the 6" lift on my Tacoma. So I'm aware of the work to get everything correct with that type of lifts.

That looks great!
What is your details? That's actually exactly what I'm looking to end up with!:reddance:

I'm at approx. 1.75" of lift with 285's. The Kuhmo tires I have are slightly smaller diameter than some other mfg's 285's, but only fractionally. I did the fender liner mod and have no rubbing at full lock and compression. Only tires I've read that have had some rubbing are the Duractracts due to their sidewall tread, but with the fender liner mod and correct alignment specs you shouldn't have a problem.....

why not just leave it stock and just get better stock sized tires?

People clear 285s with no lift. Lift does not really provide tire clearance on IFS unless you happen to never fully compress (mall crawler) or you extend the bump stops. Trimming some plastic and getting the alignment right is all you really need.

Definitely don't need a BMC unless you are trying to run wheel spacers... or a wide track or rim. I would not hack the body mounts just to run 285s... Your truck though....

No relation between suspension lift height and articulation... The stock UCAs are the first thing limiting articulation. There is still not that much to gain up front though.

It's nice to stay as low as possible and keep a good COG.. but for a 5th gen. They need help with break over in a major way. The gas tank and rear LCA mounts tend to hang climbing over anything substantial. It will work fine for small stuff though. Everyone's definition of what they want to be able to tackle is different.

If I remember when I tried out 285/70, it was a tight fit. Rubbed against some things as stated from other members above. I would say a 2 inch lift or higher would help from what I've experienced.

To a certain degree you're right. But having a 3" lift pushes your suspension down so it actually uses up most of the down travel. (Sort of like going hiking with high heels on.) Your ankle still can articulate the same range but the lift that the heels provide causes different issues.

Let's say stock you have 5" up travel and 5" of down travel. (Ideal is that both are the same)
If you lift it with a 3" lift now you have 8" up travel but only 2" down travel for wheel articulation. (Full range is 10" of wheel travel) Your low wheel will tend to lose traction sooner , due to lift off.

Because the 285's are a bit larger diameter. I want to go 1.75" to compensate just for tire clearance. (Although I may need to install bump stops) but that's only at full compression.
But that would still allow my low wheel to extend/ articulate to contact the ground and avoid lift off. (Very small advantage) but still.

I'd like to stay as low as possible for COG, and preserve as much of the range up and down as possible.

When I had the 3" toytec lift on my 06 Taco I was changing CV boots every 6-8 months, even with the Diff drop. I've had Camburg, Total Chaos, and SPC (formally LR) UCA's. Each had there advantages and disadvantages.

But this is an entirely different subject.

I just wanted to see what this set up would look like?

Thank you "Jetboy" your set up is exactly what I wanted for my truck. I'm actually looking for a set of Trail rims for my SR5.
So far those are the best looking wheels I've seen. IMHO.

If I decide to go aftermarket rims I might consider 305/65/17 tires?

Regardless the BMC is going to happen, and the fender liner and some bumper trimming also.

"2010riddle" Nice truck! did you lift the rear also?

Thanks.

I've got Fox coilovers up front and a rear 1.5" daystar spring spacer with Fox 2" rear extended travel shocks. Visually pretty much any adjustable coilover should be able to net you a 1.5" front lift. I personally like the slight rake it had OEM because I use it to haul stuff and tow a trailer fairly frequently. I'm not a fan of spacers, so I'd like to swap in different rear coils, but this was a quick fix when I punctured an air spring and I haven't gotten back to fixing it. I was worried about running stock height on longer rear shocks. I don't know if I'd bottom them out or not. So I tossed in the spacers.

I ran GX460 air springs for about a year, but took them out for now. I had a really hard time sorting out ride quality and balance with them. Offroad they were great. On road they were not so good. I think the issue was that a shock for a coil spring isn't valved appropriately for dampening an air spring, but I'm not knowledgeable enough about how to fix it and couldn't find good information on the proper shocks. I haven't given up on the idea but for now I'm just back on OEM coils with a small spacer.

Do as you please.. but you 100% do not need a BMC. Seems like a really bad idea to hack up your truck for no good reason. If you wanted to run 35s or something.. then by all means go for it.

As far as the articulation goes.. sure you bias the travel in one direction with a lift. And having a balanced travel range comes into play (especially for high speed scenarios). But for avg trail use (what 99% of 5th gens are used for)... the lift is what you want to increase offroad capability. The trucks need clearance for technical trails. There is no loss in articulation with a lift. Most suspension lifts will accommodate more articulation/travel with more extension. The rear is easy, in the front the stock UCAs will bind though.. so you need a proper aftermarket UCA to get an additional inch of travel. Each choices is give and take though.. You will gain no magic capability keeping it lower, but your call. You can also run 285s with no lift if low is your goal for some reason.

Again thank you for you reply!
Just curious? What did you have to do to make those 305/70/17 tires fit?

- Body mount chop is required for that size
- High clearance front bumper (or cut portions of the fender liner...)
- Caster at 4* +
- Relocate washer bottle
