285/75/16 Brands that wont rub

How's it going today fellow Runn4rs?

I know there are threads out there asking if the tire would rub or not, I am not asking that question however.

Here is what I would like to know:
I know there are some (285/75/16) brands/styles out there that rub and some that don't.
Question:
I want to know what brand/style 33's you run that don't rub? (Are 285/75/16 considered 33s?)
Thanks guys.
Nate.
Edit: I am running a 2.5 inch lift (Vital information I left out.)

They all rub. How much depends on what wheels you're running. You'll need to trim your front valance and the pinch welds. A small body lift will help a lot too.

Yes, the wheels will help with the rubbing, not tires. I have 4.5" BS with -6mm offset, and the only rubbing I have is at full lock, it rubs the plastic valance of the front bumper. I didn't have to trim any pinch welds and have plenty of room between tire and UCA.

I have about 3.25" in front lift though, so that may have helped me as well.

yes 285's are 33's.
I'm running pro comp muds on pro comp "polished" rims. dont know the offset of the rims since the PO did it...

No rub, but i'm running OME 3" lift, and 2" body...

Thanks for your responses.
I am using stock 16" rims. I READ people running them without rub on stock rim, is it all just a myth?

I'd say myth, although my experience is only with the duratrac 285's (and stock 5 star wheels)
Like cj80cruiser, no rub on the control arm, but they do rub at full steering lock on the frame as well as the pinch weld area at a certain steering angle + suspension compression.

I pounded the pinch weld & they still rub off road, but never on the street.

I didn't rub on the upper control arm with duratracs on stock suspension and stock wheels. I did rub on the pinch weld though.

Did you guys ever rub and the steering locked? The main reason I ask is because we have a friend who bought a new tacoma and he tried to put 33s and his steering locked up at full steering lock. Do you guys have this problem?
Thanks.

I don't think I could make it from lock to lock on stock suspension now that I think about it. Seems it rubbed on the pinchweld bad enough that I couldn't even after I pounded the pinch weld flat.

I think user: the kid ran 33s stock and had little rubbing. May have to add some wheel spacers since you have a lift. They were Maxxis Bighorns I believe. May wanna go check out his build thread.

By pinch welds, where exactly are those?

I used to have a really good pic of where I did this before but I cant find it. Since then I have changed out my fenders and the replacements cover up the beaten down pinch welds so I cant even snap a quick pic for you.

I'll do my best to describe the area. Its located on the backside of the front wheel well. You will see a bulge or ridge in the molded plastic. I used my dremel to cut that plastic away on my old fenders. This will expose the pinch weld. Then take a hammer and smash it down flat. Spray with a little paint and you're done.

while yes i have run 285s (two different sets maxxis bighorns and nitto terra grapplers) on a stock rig, i was using a 17" wheel... so im not sure if that will affect rub with the UCA, as the taller wheel will make the sidewall curve of the tire set farther out than what you would be running...

and i did have rub, but it was only at full lock and full flex, i would rub on the frame rail behind the A-arms and the pinch welds. but when you are turned to full lock and at full flex you are not moving at any considerable speed, so the likelihood of even minimal damage to the tire is very slim. infact i have never seen any signs of wear on my tires from this. i see more "damage" to my tires from the rocks and terrain im driving over than i do the frame rail and back of my fender as they are all relatively smooth -i didnt hammer down my pinch welds btw. but its very doable at least with the 17s i was running....

Thanks for your response! I sure will see about doing that.

I am sure 17's helped you with clearance issues (Might be an excuse to get me some 5 split tundra/sequioa rims eh?)

It's an odd size, but has anyone ever tried 265/80/16's?

Thanks for your responses.

NO myth....

I just got a set of 285/75/16 Kelly Safari TSR's on my 2000 4Runner limited. I have them mounted on stock 5 spoke rims without any spacers. They do not rub the upper A-arm. The shop told me that they did not hit the frame at full turn in either direction. I have not noticed any issues under normal daily driving since I got them a few days ago. I have not had a chance to flex the 4Runner out, but I suspect they will rub the pinch weld and maybe other places. I have Tundra TRD coils/adj. Tundra Bilsteins in front along with OME coils in the back. I have about 2.75" of lift, but this would probably be 1.5" lift on other year of 4Runners. The Bilsteins are set on the lowest setting.

Well you sold me on getting some 285/75/16 over the odder size 265/80/16's. Thank you for your response. As long as they don't rub under normal driving I would be happy, if anything I can always grind at it.

Not the best but here is a picture from my phone. :)

Update, as I was pulling into a parking space at work I believe the front drivers tire was rubbing on the frame. Haven't had a chance to check and see if it is in fact doing that and why the shop told me nothing was hitting at full turn.

Thank you for the update, I really appreciate it. Please let me know.

Nice ride man!
