285 tires and California Smog check

Has anyone with 285s and a 5th gen had any issues getting their 4Runner to pass a California smog check?

I'm primarily interested in 5th Gen so it would most likely be someone with a 2010-2012 as anything newer isn't due for a check until next year. Or maybe someone that purchased used and had to get it checked? But I guess the same question could be asked of earlier models.

Years ago I had a problem with my Suzuki Samurai because I had larger tires and had not corrected the gearing.

Later, I had a jeep with 35s but I regeared it at the same time so the smog check was not an issue.

Do they even put these new cars on the rollers or is it all done by computer?

I'm looking to go with at least 275s and very possibly 285s on my '18 Runner but don't want to run into headaches with smog checks down the road.

Anyone?

I believe anything 2000+ is just plugged in and checked. No rollers needed.

Smog doesn't care about tires, they care about emissions stuff. As long as they can complete their inspections and you pass the obdii checks you're fine.

Been on 285s since 9000 miles, have 175K now and it has never been an issue.

The issue is, when they put the vehicle on rollers and test it at 25 mph they check that with the RPMS and if it is off, then you don't pass no matter how clean it burns.

Just like the visual inspection, doesn't matter how clean the engine runs, if it fails the visual due to a mod or a missing sensor or something, you still fail.

But, if what was said above is acurate - that any car after 2000 doesnt go on the rollers then big tires should not be an issue as you say.

Not sure that it should matter... it's been years since I was in California but when I had 33's on my 4Runner it wasn't an issue on the dyno.

I had to smog my new 17 last year since it was bought out of state (Oregon), it's just a plug in and check dash lights, sniffer in the tail pipe. No rollers. Tire size would be irrelevant.

Yup, me too. Bought mine in Oregon and registered in CA. The smog monkeys thought it strange that a brand new vehicle required smogging, but it was just visual inspection and OBD2 connection.

Went trailing the other day (don't even want to call it wheeling) and smashed the front skid plate, both frame rails and tagged my right rock slider.

Love this rig but I need a couple inches of lift and bigger meats.
