why is that ? i mean most of the prolevel audio cards out there
are pci - not pcie. the mac pro lacks pci ports i know...
could we do this ourselves and write a driver ?
oppinions?

I know this post is old, but I figured anybody who has a 2nd gen and doesn't know how to do this will get a little help.
Currently, I have polk db series 4" in my dash and polk db 6x9's in the cargo.
Also have a Pioneer AVH-P3100DVD in the big Double Din opening.
In order to get to the speakers up front, you'll have to remove about 8 screws from the dash and 2 10mm bolts.
The drivers side will not come off all the way, you'll just have to pull it down. Also, remove the small ignition panel.
The passenger side, the screws are mostly behind the glove box and you'll have to disconnect the wiring to the stock speaker box with the 4" speaker and the glove box lighting.
Once you have that done, you can basically just plug and play 4" speakers, although not all will fit, I have mine held in with 2 screws each and surrounded with some foam tape you can get from anywhere.
The back speakers are not as easy.
You have to lower the tailgate, unscrew the lower panel where the trunk meets the tailgate. Next, start to pop off the back panels carefully. Actually, before that you need to look up and pull off the dome light panel. THEN start disconnecting the back panels. Lower the seats, and unscrew the large bolts holding on the seat belts. Once you have all that done, you should see the factory speaker boxes. The best idea is just to remove these because the "5 1/4" speaker opening is not actually 5 1/4". I removed the speaker boxes with a lot of torque and broke two of the bolts in half in the process and then cut holes in my rear panels to install 6x9s.
Now, for the reciever.
Do this when you have the dash off.
Remove the temperature controls and the small panel right in front of your shifter.
You should be able to undo about 6 screws in either side and then be able to just pull it right out.

I will try to have a picture up tomorrow. I might take the back panels off to fix the rattle so it may help you out a bit if I take them off and get a picture of the inside.
I'll try to have that up soon though.

Hey you were able to install 6x9's in the rear? I started a thread a few weeks back in the regards to the same topic as this thread. I went to best buy and they said that I could 5 1/4 I. The rear but after seeing the rear I went with 6 1/2's instead. Did you mount yours horizontally? And was there a lot of custom install you had to do? I got 4s for the front as well and am planning on installing today

The 5 1/4s hardly fit in the original box that's in the 4runner.
The 6 1/2s will probably be able to fit if you cut it.
I fit the 6x9s in there by actually cutting horizontal holes in the back panels.
I didn't have the tools so I had somebody at Car Toys do it after I removed the boxes myself.
They did the wiring, but it doesn't seem like it should be too hard as long as you know which wires to connect to the speaker.
I'm still working on getting pictures. I need to find my camera.
It's a fairly flush mount though.
the 4's are easy to install and they actually get "decent" bass from the stock boxes for being 4 inch speakers.
Well the install went better than expected to be honest. I did the 2-4" speakers last night. I was hoping to get the rears in as well, but I lack a jigsaw/sawzal(sp). So I'm going to be doing the rest Monday, my next day off. They were really quite easy though, especially being my first install it was nice to do it myself. I would have gone on but not only was the saw am issue but since I live in park city, Utah it was freezing, dark out, and was starting to snow!

Congrats on getting the fronts changed. I would highly advise against cutting holes in the rear. You might even get it to look good, but it will probably not sound so hot. I mean...you're using plastic for a baffle, and it will probably rattle like hell. Even toyota used an enclosure box for those tiny 5.25s. Sure you can't stuff 6X9s into those boxes, but you can probably mod the boxes to fit, or fab some new boxes to fit.
Also, you may consider running a crossover to your front speakers. They can't handle bass even if you get good ones. So, if you try to crank the bass to your rears, the fronts will destroy the sound.
Lastly, just to show I'm not talking out of my ass... Here's my Alpine V12 concealed install.

Oh I wasn't planning on installing them in that box although I had planned in stashing an amp back there if I went with a sub. I was planning on installig the 6.5s in the spot of the 5.25s. Take the small ones out, and then cut them to size if need be and install them in that space.

My 94 had 4" in the boxes in the rear. Got a set of Polk Audio from LKQ in NC that looked brand new. 5 bucks a pop. Just cant get the sound to come ot of the speakers. Everything that is behind the radio is connected. Also have the speakers up top around the cargo lamp. Was thare any sort of factory amp or something that tied the rear speakers in the side panels in w/ the rear ones up top/
