3.0 fails to start after mud bath

ok might a long shot but you guys hosed of the interior, even tho you have the 3 things need to fire. its possible that the ecu has gotten wet and is messed up? the only other thing i can think of would be timing. pull at least the upper covers off and see it is all still lined up with the crank

You talking about the valve covers? I don't mind helping him pull the valve covers, I just wanted to test everything external before we start dissecting his engine.

But if the mechanical timing was off, that means the timing belt would have had to break right? Even if it jumped a tooth or something wouldn't we hear some sort of valve slapping or tapping on the pistons?

Thanks for all the help so far guys, we need it!

So far this is my line of thinking on what to check first:
1) Verify ignition timing again. It's possible the distributor is off a tooth or two causing it to not start?

2) Cold start injection system. Check the values of the timer, wiring and the injector itself.

3) Idle air speed valve. I guess all we can do is just clean that one.

4) I'll do the testing on the ECU with the multimeter and make sure it's sending and receiving the proper signals.

5) Pull the intake plenum and check everything underneath and pull the valve covers to make sure everything there is in good shape and turning with timing belt.

If anyone thinks I'm doing something out of sequence let me know and I'll adjust fire.

Thanks!!

woops i mean the upper timing cover off to check the timing belt. i know a video of the engine trying to start can help. just by listen i can tell if it has good compression and if it is trying to start. its very odd to have fuel, spark, air and no start. this tells me the ecu is working. the only thing would be timing is off

sounds more like it wont start after washing the engine and interior since thats when it stopped wanting to start

The battery was unplugged a few times during the testing and swapping parts. We also unplugged the ecu for about 10 minutes to reset it.

We did spray some starting fluid directly into the throttle body and got nothing, not even a little hiccup of the motor trying to start.

Keep em' coming guys. We can use all the help we can get.

If FOG is turning the engine over while you are spraying the ether and there is no start, wouldn't that mean there is no spark?
I know you guys said you have spark though.....

Just thinking out loud.

Im definetly going with a sensor or ecu. I would try ecu first if you can find someone to lend one since its free and easy. Then i would look into sensors.

Thanks for all the ideas! I took the day off to hang with my kids (slave labor). Back to playing with it tomorrow.

Sprayed the interior huh... What about the neutral start switch? Im not sure though, because if that was damaged, it might not turn over at all.

Have you tried putting a little gas directly into the cylinders through the plug hole?

... This ones a head scratcher. :moping:

Is it a manual? Did you try push start?

Lots of smart stuff already tried. Maybe a dumb one now. Can you drain the gas tank and fill up with fresh gas? Maybe it's bad gas, or you got water in the tank during pressure washing, do you have a good gas cap, is it screwed on right?

My first reaction after the inside wash-up was the ECU and the clutch peddal button or park switch if automatic, but with that failing it would not do anything at all I believe.

EGR stuck open or PCV clogged or disconnected hose?

It is a manual transmission. FYI

to try a few more things today. If I can't get it started by the end of the day, I'm rolling it to a shop. I know a shop that won't charge me a fortune. Very frustrated.
