3.0 fails to start after mud bath

As SVD said, YES WE CHECKED THE FSM, New starter turns, but engine does not start. We have spark. New MAF is functioning properly. I'm really at a loss. I need some fresh ideas to check.

Long story short: We hit the mud pit. It started fine once after that. Went back out a few days later to a dead battery. Replaced battery (free from Advanced Auto), been having starter issues so I finally just replaced the starter with a new one for piece of mind. It cranks, but no start. No codes are coming from the engine.

Seems like it is not getting fuel, but you can hear the fuel pump engage so the problem is not from that end. Injectors not getting power?

Like I said, just looking for fresh ideas.

Off the top of my head, have you tried starter fluid in the intake? That'd tell you right away if you were looking at a fuel or timing issue.

ETA - does the 3.0 have a TPS? Water in the TPS or connectors?

All your plug wires still solidly connected, and no moisture inside the dist. cap? Also check the coil and make sure it hasn't been adversely affected.

Our idea today is to go through his wire harness and make sure that the harness is in good shape. Make sure that nothing got busted in it from flying debris in the mud. We're also going to check all the sensors that we can via the FSM.

There are a couple things that the FSM said were a higher possibility as to why the engine wouldn't start. They all pretty much led to a lack of spark, we verified that we're getting spark. I feel pretty positive that his timing is good but we're going to double check that today. We know he's getting pressure to his fuel rails, he's getting spark and we know he's getting air. So for some reason his injectors aren't firing, at least that is my line of thinking.

I guess today I get to learn about the 3vz motors somewhat in depth. If it was a 22re I would be able to almost diagnose it immediately. I have never really dealt with the 3vz motors before.

If anyone has actual useful information feel free to post up. For those who want to just make cracks... well... :rockthrow:

:peace:

Was the battery fine before the trip in the mud and then go out a couple of time/trips later? I'm wondering if your ALT is fried, leading to a weak battery and then if the ignitor or the coil got fried from trying to struggle with a weak start? Ignitor may be sending an incorrect voltage signal to the coil or the coil could be firing in wrong order?

With the amount of mud in your engine bay it could be anything........maybe even a clogged vacume line.

I do like Kids idea of the starter fluid in the intake. At least see if fires that way. Are you smelling fuel when you try like it is flooded?

I wasn't smelling any gas. We pulled one of the spark plugs and it wasn't even wet after multiple attempts of trying to start the engine.

I'll check out the FSM for the testing of the coil and test it just to rule it out.

Try cracking the fuel rail by the injectors and see if the fuel is getting to the injectors. I was having the same problem with a friends 3.0l. It was getting fuel but no power to the injectors. We then unplugged the ECU box and plugged it back in which I guess resets the electrical. It worked after that. Also, check fuses

Besides the fuel problem...Was it a watery mud pit? check all your fuses, grounds, solenoid. Kinda sounds like something may be giving it constant power that you don't want

This is SVD at FOG's house.. We are stumped. We have fuel pressure at the rail, A noid test says the injectors are firing as they should. We have good spark and a new coil. We have good air coming in, with a new air filter. The throttle body is somewhat clean but I don't see the little bit of grime in the Throttle body contributing to our problem.

If we have good fuel, injectors firing, and good spark, that leads me to believe that the electrical system is in good shape and ecu is doing its job.

My next guess (the FSM is just about useless at this point) would be vacuum lines. There are about a million vacuum lines on the 3vz so my question is what is a good way to check the vacuum lines and which ones should we check first.

If someone doesn't think the vacuum lines are the issue, please speak up. We are about out of ideas.

The next 4runner challenge is to get this damn motor started!!!
