3 Months in a 4Runner

Firstly, Congrats on your trip...I know you are having a truly life changing experience. My Wife and I also took a trip back in 1996 wherein we traveled the united states for ten weeks. Mostly camping and staying in national parks. We also took in many big city attractions like Las Vegas, Santa Monica, Miami, and others...Anyway, I hope you have a great time...

One last question, Are you Buggin-Out by chance?
 
Pacific northwest. After a leisurely cruise up the 1. Detour out ofncsli to hit Utah, then swim back through Oregon.

See St. Helens, Rainer, the Puget Sound (i saw 17 confirmed killer whales in one pod literally in my back yard, from my deck this last week.)

If you want nature, this is the season for Rockies and Pacific northwest... I would not envy those stuck driving in a noreaster... As much as I want to see the whole Appalachian side of things some day.

Plus, the food is incredible... Portland has become a food mecca. (I'm a relocated Texan living north of Tacoma, WA)
 
Great photos! I'm jealous, wish I could take off a big chunk of time like that and just GO.

What were your favorite places? highlights?
 
So cool to actually hear someone say they are going to do something and then do it. It looks like you had a lot of fun and saw a lot along the way. I bet a lot of people would if they could take the time. Love that RTT. \m/ (..) \m/

I have always wanted to take some of the roads less traveled, but I have no idea where to start looking for these amazing scenic places, that you can legally drive through.

How did you find these places to travel? What resource did you use?

there is a lot of public land in the west. i found traveling through the rocky mountain states that national forest and blm lands were often right next to national parks. most of these national forest have roads that are open to vehicles and you are free to camp just about anywhere if you're not blocking the road.

i used benchmark atlases. it's nice to have something you can just flip through and plan your routes. Atlases - Benchmark Maps

i also used avenza pdf maps app for my phone. they have a lot of free maps but also national forest maps that show your location while driving. i used this countless times to re-adjust where i was going to camp or explore... PDF Maps Mobile App

if you drive on federal public lands it's also good to know what roads are open seasonally. most forest service districts have mvum pdfs that show these roads open to vehicle use.... however i haven't found a good 'collection' all in one place... but the forest service websites have them for download... like this one... maybe a little dancing... bears, coyote, marmot... no wolves though.

If you haven't seen it yet, check out Expedition Overland's ak/yk series on youtube. After watching that, I'm trying to figure out how the hell I could take enough time off to do some sort of epic trip like that. I can't tell you how jealous I am. Like, not with any words I know.
