3-ton Jack Stands Safe Enough...?

I have been lucky to this point not to have the need to lift my Runner off of the ground to do any work. But, I want to rotate my tires and change gear oil, so I'm going to have to put it on the lift.

I have two sets of 3-ton jack stands, but I don't know if they'll be strong/safe enough. Anyone else using 3-ton jacks for their Gen 4 Runners? I'm sure I'm just being overly cautious and things will be fine, but just wanted to hear from others.

You have no problem with weight. They will be at or near full extension, so stability is a concern. Stick to level, flat concrete only, be careful, and you will be fine. If you are on anything else, I would trade up to something like a 6-ton, which have a wider base, stand taller and will be much more forgiving of any mistakes, or any give in something like asphalt on a hot day.
 
Thanks guys for the info. The Durk, I would only use them in my garage, but I was looking at the 6-ton stands, just for more "security".

I also got a creeper so now I don't have to lay on the concrete floor, which will be great!

Just be sure that you find secure places on frame or rear axle. So if truck wiggles the stands don't slip out. A sure footing is a must as well.
 
Hey OP, not sure about the rest of the guys here, but even with the jack stands, I keep the jack(s) I'm using fully engaged as well, so on any given job, I have 4-6 point of contact. Overkill, sure, but a father in my friends neighborhood was killed in his garage, and I had a jack hardpoint on my old Audi fail and nearly had the front rotor take off the toes on my right foot. better safe than sorry, eh?

6-ton stands might offer some nice peace of mind
 
I've used 3-ton jack stands purchased about 15 years ago for my 5000 lb 97' GMC K1500 Extended Cab pickup and I've never felt insecure while working under the vehicle. But always as a precaution, I'll put the floor jack under the differential for added security.
 
I need more than 4 points, too.

I use 6 stands even though they're 3-ton stands.

If I only used 4, I would definitely always have the floor jack supporting whichever end I was under for redundancy.
 
I use 4 3 tonne stands, they work good. After I lift her I jump on the bump or door frame for good measure. Be safe
 
3-ton is sufficient. You may find that they don't raise 4Runner's high enough to do work on which makes the 6 ton stands a better choice.

yeah i have the 6 ton guys because i find it easier to reach the frame rails and i find it best to put a stand under the frame rail.

yeah thats what I was saying - i have 6 ton stands which can go higher than my 3 ton stands and I prefer to use them. My 3 ton stands can barely lift the tire too. sorry I just realized that post sounded half retarded. beer + late :ranger:

Thanks again everyone. I used the 3-tons on my TL when I had it and they worked great for it but I think it's time to upgrade to taller, more stout stands.
I actually was looking at the 12-ton stands, but they're too big!
Time to get some 6-ton stands...
 
I would like to have a set of 6 tons for the height, plus we have a yukon xl 2500 and I can never seem to get it high enough off the ground and feel safe with the 3 ton jack stands.
 
If the 3-ton stands are tall enough...then they will work find. The 4runner weighs LESS then 2-ton. And when you lift one corner...even if it's a front corner where the engine is you'll be lifting no more then probably 1200lbs.

nothing to do with the weight, my 3 ton stand at full height can't reach the frame rail and be high enough to have the tire off the ground. It's close though, at stock height it would work though. Or a 3 ton stand works under the crossmember in the front but I don't find that as sturdy
